We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Reco McCambry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Reco below.
Reco, appreciate you joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
I was raised in a single parent household the duration of my childhood. My mother taught me many things to become the man I am today but if I had to choose one that has had the biggest impact on my life it would be “Independence”.
I watched my mother work 2-3 jobs at one time to ensure she had enough money to pay our bills without any government assistance. She was also determined to not have to depend on a man nor my grandparents. I watched her navigate life from my younger years when we lived in the projects to eventually becoming a home owner and having multiple vehicles.
The lessons learned give me the tenacity to never quit and ingrained in me the ability to figure things out myself and pursue success if I was alone or not. I learned to that if I wanted anything worthwhile, I would have to work for it and not depend on anyone else to give me a handout to get it.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have owned my current company since 2014. Upon launching the company our goal was to have products and services that EVERYONE could take advantage of. We weren’t going to serve one industry, we were going to serve as many industries as possible. We were a “lifestyle enhancement company” providing a membership that offered ways for everyone to improve their lifestyle.
Even though we were able to start growing revenue quickly, over time I realized our motives in the marketplace were unclear and it was also complicated training our employees and sales people to sell what we do. I made a decision to focus on where we were having the most impact and where we had the highest margins (highest revenues and lowest costs).
This brought me to the decision to focus on the financial services industry exclusively. After a few years focusing on this one industry, we noticed a fast growing trend that allowed us to position ourselves in a strategic way. Within two years, we became and still are the largest fintech direct sales company in the US!
The decision to pivot has paid great dividends.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
Even though we serve one industry, fintech (financial services), we serve consumers and businesses, allowing us to have a B2C, B2B, and B2B2C business model. With these 3 approaches with several products/services within each approach, it has allowed us to have a very lucrative business.
