We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adrien Paczosa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Adrien, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
A risk that I took that changed the course of my life and company was so simple and something we all do daily, answer an email. I answered a random email from someone asking to learn about the dietetic field and if I could take the time to answer their questions. I love talking about the joy and passion I have about being a registered dietitian, so taking time to talk and share that with someone I am all for.
That simple conversation grew into so much more over the course of 4 months. That simple email and chat took me from a small group practice of registered dietitians to parenting with a technology company to be one of the largest tele-nutrition companies in the nation providing access to care to thousands.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Adrien Paczosa (RD, LD, CDERD-S) has more than 20 years of experience working in the dietetic field with a focus on eating disorders, neurochemistry nutrition, and business development. In 2007, Paczosa founded and opened her first private practice in Austin, Texas called iLiveWell Nutrition. Paczosa combined evidence-based nutrition science with a compassionate approach to counseling patients to deliver health outcomes and improve patients’ day-to-day lives. She has personally counseled with hundreds of patients ranging from severe eating disorder cases to diabetics to high-performance athletes.
A few years later, iLiveWell Nutrition has become Nourish — a nation-wide, virtual-first nutrition group focused on addressing America’s healthcare crisis through greater access to nutrition care. Paczosa now serves as the Chief Clinical Officer of Nourish and what started out as just an idea now serves thousands of patients, nearly all of whom use the service via telehealth and are completely covered by their health insurance.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Volunteer in all professional networks is what helped me build up my reputation in my market. First off, I’m a social person who loves to meet other people and connect and learn from them. Getting involved in dietitian communities and giving back to help grow our profession was fun and also helped me to connect with so many others in the market which helped to grow my practice.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with the people who purchased my company, and the next thing that helped this partnership be successful is keeping detailed notes and documents of everything I did. From the bookkeeping and financials to SOP’s to marketing, I kept detailed documentation of everything. Also what has helped the partnership continue is continuing to grow is the ability to grow with the company We are all learning new systems, and areas of our experiences, and growing together has been very rewarding and inspiring.
