We recently connected with Vicki Adams Beam and have shared our conversation below.
Vicki, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Our family loves being in the antique industry and being surrounded by beautiful antiques. We search high and low in Europe to select fine and unique antiques to display in our spacious showroom. However, over the years, this process has become more difficult for everyone in this industry. We are fortunate to have such strong contacts we have established over the years, especially given recent shipping challenges. These people are invaluable in helping us locate great antiques (as well as particular pieces requested by interior designers who frequent our showroom).

Vicki, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up in a family with a great love for antiques, we frequently traveled to Europe in search of uniquely beautiful items to fill each home we acquired. These experiences naturally led to the development of our family-owned business: Jacqueline Adams Antiques. It was started by my parents, Jim and Jacqueline Adams, in 1980 in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In 1989, we moved the business to Atlanta and then expanded it in 2004 in the prestigious Galleries of Peachtree Hills.
At Jacqueline Adams Antiques, we have been a direct importer of fine European antiques for over 40 years, specializing in 17th, 18th and 19th century French, Italian, Swedish and Dutch antiques. We have worked closely with several interior designers over the years: refinishing and re-upholstering furniture, rewiring lighting for modern homes, and (our favorite) being on the hunt for specific items requested by designers. Seeing these antiques find a new life in a beautiful new space always makes our effort worth it!
Any advice for managing a team?
In our store, it’s always like a treasure hunt! What keeps morale high (and gets us most excited) is having regular and ongoing shipments of products. We love opening boxes, almost like it’s Christmas morning, multiple times a year. We also really enjoy staging the showroom in new and exciting ways. Changing up our surroundings helps us to stay engaged and gives our customers new thrills to enjoy!

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Over the past 40 years, we have prided ourselves in providing our customers with access to high-quality, fine antiques. We inspect each item that hits our showroom to ensure that it is fully functional and ready for its new home, often reupholstering chairs and fixing cabinet locks or door hinges. When customers buy from us, they know that the items they receive will exceed their expectations. Our attention to detail goes a long way with our direct customers and interior design partners. Our passion for our business shines in all of our interactions, and we look forward to serving our community for many years to come.
