We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erika J. Wood a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Erika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
This might sound cliche, but I knew deep down that I wanted to pursue a profession in television and film at a very young age. I used to dress up with my friends and put on shows for my Mom and her friends when the mood to perform would summon. Additionally, being active in the community and church were also catalysts for my passion in the arts. After college, I attempted to conform to getting a “real job” and quickly I realized that the traditional corporate life was daunting and unfulfilling. All of these experiences lead me to move to NYC and take all of the acting classes I could – they prepared me for my Acting career, which in turn lead me to pursue Photography.

Erika, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Actor’s life is a true journey! I started my career in Atlanta, GA where I was introduced to being an extra on a plethora of television series. One day I received a call to be Monique’s stand in on her BET talk show (and at that time I was still very green to the craft.) However, I learned so much about stage presence, owning the moment, lighting, teleprompting etc… not to mention all of the beautiful people I met, and they will never be forgotten. Shortly after the show was cancelled, I moved to NYC to pursue my dream.
New York City, what can I say other than it is NOT for the faint of heart. Surviving alone is one thing but hustling and bustling from auditions to classes to rehearsal and choosing between a metro card and food in hindsight were serendipitous. After a few years of working diligently towards my passion on an Artist’s budget was becoming daunting. However, learning to find the balance of adulthood / responsibilities is needed: so, getting a “real job” wasn’t so bad of a compromise. It took some time, but I eventually learned: you can still do what you love and maintain a redeemable living! So, I would go to my auditions on my lunch breaks and if the project was worth it, I’d take a sick day. Looking back, I don’t know how but the Universe always made a way! 13 years later I’ve been blessed to work on various networks such as: Nickelodeon, MTV, CBS, Disney Plus, Discovery ID and NBC.
I must say, I am most proud of myself for believing in myself! It takes a certain courage to take tiny steps, which lead to giant steps … all while people are trying to push you down. Think about it, so many people we know live in so much regret because they gave up on themselves and allowed others to push them down. I broke the cycle of self-doubt and so can you-keep growing!
It might take 5, 10 or 15 years to get the role of your dreams but once you do…you can proudly say – “It didn’t happen overnight”

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My go to book that one that I strongly recommend “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho has molded my philosophy in general. It will train your Entrepreneural mind to always see the glass half full.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is maintaining my happiness. I audition frequently and have some projects in the works. All while kicking off my Photography Headshot business in Washington DC. Not to mention the fact that I actually enjoy working at my 9-5 as an Event Manager.
To all my creatives: think outside the box to create your own happiness and peace of mind!
