We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nisha Agrawal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Absolutely — I’m genuinely fulfilled by what I do. My creative world is quite diverse: I’m a henna artist, I paint using henna-inspired techniques, I’ve worked on murals, and I run a clothing and styling business. Creativity isn’t just my profession; it’s how I naturally express myself.
That said, the idea of a “regular” job does cross my mind from time to time. The predictability of a steady paycheck is appealing, and honestly, some days the thought of dressing up, walking into an office, and having someone hand me a defined task sounds almost relaxing. There’s a real comfort in not having to carry the weight of the business side constantly.
But when I see friends and family locked into rigid 9-to-5 schedules, I know I wouldn’t trade my freedom. Creativity doesn’t run on a fixed clock — inspiration strikes when it strikes. I love having the autonomy to shape my days around that process, to create when ideas come naturally rather than when a calendar says to. That freedom is irreplaceable.

Nisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Tell us about yourself and how you got into your craft.
I’m a professional artist, designer, and creative entrepreneur passionate about freehand art and styling. My journey began with a deep love for traditional art forms, which naturally grew into a creative business. Over the years, I’ve expanded my work beyond henna into paintings, murals, textile work, clothing styling, and custom design. Creativity has always been central to who I am, and I built my career around the freedom to create across different mediums.
What type of products, services, and creative works do you provide?
My work centers around detailed freehand artistry expressed in different ways. I provide custom henna services for weddings, corporate events, and private gatherings, along with traditional clothing draping and styling. I also create fine art paintings, murals, and custom textile work, while offering curated supplies, clothing alterations, and styling services.
What problems do you solve for clients, and what sets you apart?
For milestone events like weddings and corporate gatherings, clients want more than a service—they want a stress-free, memorable experience. I combine creativity with professionalism, managing everything smoothly while tailoring designs to each individual. What sets me apart is my versatility and commitment to originality. Every piece I create is freehand and uniquely designed rather than copied, giving clients something truly personal.
What are you most proud of, and what should people know about your brand?
I’m proud to have served over 1,000 brides and to have taken my work internationally for destination events. Most importantly, I want clients to know that we value individuality. Whether it’s henna, styling, fine art, or murals, our goal is to create meaningful, beautiful work in a welcoming and professional environment.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Absolutely. Early in my career, about 20 years ago, I fell into a trap that almost broke my spirit. I was a stay-at-home mom, new to the U.S., and entirely unsure of how to navigate the American business world. Coming from India, I was raised with a deep cultural value for hard work and careful saving. I entered into what I thought was a 50/50 partnership with a close friend, I poured my soul into the artistry, working grueling hours under a hot tent every single weekend, while she managed the finances.
I was so intensely focused on building our future and saving every penny that I wouldn’t even buy food for myself during those long festival days; I would plan to bring lunch or eat after going home.
After six months of that exhausting, self-denying labor, I finally asked to see our earnings. My friend handed me a spreadsheet where she had deducted her personal car insurance, gas, and even the daily lunches she ate while I fasted. My payout for half a year of sacrifice was exactly six dollars.
I was utterly devastated. To have someone capitalize on my innocence, watch me starve for our business, and then lock me out of our accounts felt like a cruel rejection of my worth. I cried, felt like an absolute failure, and wanted to lock my art supplies away forever.
But that rock bottom taught me who I really was. When my world shattered, my family picked up the pieces. My husband stepped in as my absolute hero, refusing to let me give up on my gift. He built me a website, took over the logistics, and stood by me through years of blistering heat, sudden storms, and the chaos of raising young kids.
Nearly two decades later, I am still standing, thriving, and completely transformed. That betrayal could have poisoned art for me, but instead, it taught me that my creativity belongs to me. Today, sitting with a bride for hours isn’t just work, it’s my therapy, my sanctuary, and a beautiful exchange of pure, positive energy. I survived the storm, and I’d still choose to create over anything else

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist is rewarding because it allows me to bring joy, connection, and cultural appreciation into people’s lives through my work. As a henna artist, I have the privilege of being part of some of life’s most meaningful moments—weddings, celebrations, festivals, baby showers, and community events. Seeing a client’s face light up when they see their finished henna design is incredibly fulfilling.
Creativity gives me the freedom to transform a simple idea into something beautiful and unique. Every hand, every client, and every event inspires a different design, which means I am constantly learning, growing, and challenging myself as an artist. Henna is more than decoration; it tells stories, celebrates traditions, and creates lasting memories.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is connecting with people from diverse backgrounds in Austin and beyond. Through henna, I can share a piece of my culture while also creating designs that reflect each person’s individuality. Knowing that my art becomes part of someone’s special day or cherished memory is what continues to inspire me and makes being an artist so meaningful.
