We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Preethi Sarada a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Preethi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
Henna By Preethi started when I volunteered at a school festival after being recommended by a friend. Many people showed interest in the henna designs, which inspired her to explore the idea of turning it into a business.
I began by offering henna at fundraising and community events, often providing services for free. As interest grew, these opportunities gradually developed into a business.
To improve my skills, I took online henna classes before and during COVID-19, learning more advanced techniques. Through lots of practice and experience, I expanded my services and built a strong customer base.
After moving to different locations, Google Business listings and social media became important ways to reach new clients. Since moving to California, the business has continued to grow due to the high demand for henna services. Overall, scaling up the business mostly just took practice, outreach, and a community.

Henna by Preethi is professional henna art based in Bay Area. I specialize in bridal mehndi, guest henna, and henna for weddings, festivals, corporate events, and private celebrations. My henna is 100% natural, homemade henna and I take pride in creating customized designs that reflect each client’s style and vision. My goal is to provide beautiful, intricate henna artwork and a memorable experience for every occasion.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients has been social media and the strong community built around Henna By Preethi. Through genuine connections, client referrals, and word-of-mouth recommendations, the business has continued to grow organically..

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation has been built through the relationships I’ve developed with my clients and the quality of service I provide. Each satisfied client helps introduce Henna By Preethi to new families and communities, creating a foundation of trust, confidence, and lasting relationships. These personal recommendations and referrals have played a significant role in helping my business grow and establish a strong presence within the market.
