We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr Reba Perry-Ufele a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr Reba, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I was working with Doctors Without Boarders volunteering abroad as a nurse to give out immunizations. We were asked to assist with baby deliveries .
I was fascinated the mother’s had no prenatal care but had healthy babies . I was more impressed the babies were delivered by midwives.
When I came back to America I took the required courses to become a Midwife and started my own Doula Academy.
My mission was to stop Black Women from Maternal Death.
Dr Reba, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Certified International Doula
I started my Doula Academy to help Black Women from Maternal Death.
I trained doulas worldwide including Africa.
My program is free and I share my wealth of knowledge with women of all cultures.
My mission is to never let any black woman die from giving birth.
My Doulas are Moms themselves and understand the birth process because they been through it themselves.
I have personally assist deliveries of 628 Babies .
I accomplished alot by just providing this great free training .
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner was met through a award ceremony I was presenting to her.
Dr. Linda Gary is a pioneer of humanitarian work for the United Nations NGO as a Ambassador.
Our mission statement is the same saving Black Women from Maternal Death.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would choose this specialty because I personally know the importance of saving lives during birthing process.
I was that mom that almost lost her life during an unnecessary c-section.
I flatl lined on the operating table loss two units of blood.
It took me a year to recover but I knew had to stop this horrible serious situation from happening to any other woman.
