We were lucky to catch up with Melanie Herschorn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was helping entrepreneurs with marketing strategy for their businesses when I began getting phone calls from authors asking me if I could help them market their books. Of course I said “Yes!” I saw a big need in the marketplace, so I went all in as a book marketer. A couple of years in, I could see a pattern repeating: These authors had published a book that was often mediocre in terms of editing, cover design, and layout and they were disappointed with the results they’d been promised by their publisher. I knew I could do it better. So I launched our publishing and promotion package and it’s been a game-changer for authors. It is a mostly done-for-you offer and in just one our per week of their time, we get their expertise out of their head and into a manuscript, publish it, and promote it for them.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m the founder of Big Impact Books, an award-winning journalist, bestselling author, and publisher. I help CEOs, entrepreneurs, attorneys, and thought leaders write, publish, and promote books that build authority, increase visibility, and create real business growth.
My path into this work started in journalism. As a reporter, I learned how powerful the right message can be. A strong story can shape the way people see you, establish credibility, and open doors. Through my work in public relations and entrepreneurship, I kept seeing the same problem: smart, accomplished experts had so much knowledge to share, but they weren’t always communicating it in a way that helped them stand out.
That’s what led me to create Big Impact Books. I saw that a well-positioned book could be so much more than something to check off a bucket list. When created strategically, a book becomes a business asset. It can help someone become more visible, attract high-value clients, get booked for speaking opportunities, secure media coverage, and build a stronger professional reputation.
Today, my team and I guide clients through the full process of creating an authority-building book. We help them clarify their message, organize their ideas, publish professionally, and promote their book in a way that supports their bigger business goals.
What sets us apart is that we don’t treat publishing like a hobby or a vanity project. We treat it like a strategy. Every decision, from the message to the structure to the promotion plan, is designed to help our clients build credibility and become known for their expertise.
One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing our clients use their books to create opportunities they didn’t have before. I’ve seen books lead to media features, speaking invitations, stronger client conversations, and a much clearer position in the marketplace. That’s the kind of impact that matters to me.
The main thing I want people to know about me and Big Impact Books is that I believe expertise deserves visibility. So many brilliant professionals are overlooked simply because they haven’t packaged and positioned their knowledge clearly. My work is about helping them turn what they know into a powerful book that supports their reputation, grows their business, and creates lasting opportunities.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my audience on social media definitely didn’t happen overnight. It took years of consistently showing up, sharing valuable content, and building relationships. I think one of the biggest misconceptions people have is that social media is all about posting content. The reality is that social media is about being social.
For me, the real growth came when I stopped thinking of social media as a broadcasting platform and started treating it as a relationship-building tool. It’s not enough to post and then disappear until your next post. The magic happens in the conversations.
Some of the strongest relationships I’ve built have started in the direct messages. When someone comments on a post, sends a message, or asks a question, I make an effort to engage. Those one-on-one conversations create trust, and trust is what ultimately builds a loyal audience.
My advice for someone just starting out is to focus less on follower counts and more on genuine connection. Be consistent, be helpful, and be willing to engage with people. Respond to comments. Start conversations. Get curious about the people in your community.
At the end of the day, people do business with people they know, like, and trust. Social media gives us an incredible opportunity to build those relationships at scale, but it starts with being present and actually connecting with the people on the other side of the screen.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I believe client relationships don’t end when a project is complete. In many ways, that’s when a new chapter begins (no pun intended).
One of the things I value most is staying connected with the people I’ve had the privilege of working with. When someone becomes a client, they remain in my thoughts and in my heart long after we’ve finished working together. I genuinely care about their success and want to see them continue to grow and thrive.
Because of that, I regularly keep an eye out for opportunities that might benefit them. If a media opportunity, podcast interview, speaking engagement, networking connection, or other resource comes across my desk and I think it could be a good fit for a past client, I’ll reach out and share it. Sometimes it’s years after we’ve worked together.
I think brand loyalty is built through genuine relationships, not transactions. People remember how you made them feel and whether you continued to support them when there wasn’t anything in it for you. My goal has always been to be a long-term resource and advocate for the people I work with.
That’s one of the things I love most about what I do. Over the years, many clients have become friends, referral partners, and valued members of my community. Those relationships are incredibly meaningful to me, and I believe they are the foundation of lasting loyalty and trust.
