We recently connected with Alyssa Wedemeyer and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of my passions is American history. I love learning it, teaching it, and reflecting on it. I homeschool my children, and quickly learned there weren’t many engaging resources for ages kindergarten to fifth grade that taught on America in a way where the information would really stick. I decided to create a series called ABC’s of America for Kids. A series that shares facts for every letter of the alphabet in full and slant rhyme, accompanied by beautiful watercolor illustrations. To see children really comprehend and retain what they are learning while reading my book series is one of the most meaningful projects I could’ve written and published!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a stay at home mom of three. I homeschool my children and am pursuing a Masters of History degree at Liberty University. Ever since I was a child, I have loved to write. I would be nominated for awards from the different pieces I’ve crafted, but shortly after becoming a mom, I let that passion fall to the wayside. After picking back up my history degree, my children became interested in what I was learning – but they couldn’t find any resources that kept them engaged for long enough to learn anything! I decided it was the time to “dust off my passion” so to speak and write a primer series that I know children would look forward to reading, themselves. I have extensive experience writing educational curriculum for K-5th grade (wrote curriculum for my Church’s youth for multiple years as an employee), so I took my expertise and applied it to this series!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I became a mom, I had to pivot. I stopped pursuing my writing career and focused solely on my babies for a few years. These past two years, I did a major pivot again and began pursuing school and publishing – and my children have loved being a part of that journey!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing someone with a copy of my book. There’s truly nothing like it! All of the work that has gone into creating this content for the world…it’s amazing to see someone get to enjoy my creation!
