We recently connected with JUAN COON and have shared our conversation below.
JUAN, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I started as an emcee in a rap group. One day, our DJ couldn’t make it to a gig, so I filled in. I was only 13 or 14 years old at the time, and I found the experience incredibly enjoyable. Even though I was part of a group, I felt a strong sense of focus on my role, and I loved that!
Years later, when I entered college at UConn, I had accumulated a serious sound system and a record collection from my DJing experiences. The kids in my dorm dubbed me “the resident DJ.” This led me to DJ almost every party at the school for about five to six years and introduced me to radio. My college station, WHUS, provided me with an internship at WBLS radio in New York, which changed my life overnight.
Looking back, I feel as if I fell into these opportunities, and they seemed destined to happen as they did.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Juan Coon, and I feel blessed to wear many hats. Many people know me primarily as a DJ. I have performed at numerous venues, clubs, and events across the United States and internationally. Additionally, I have been featured on radio stations in New York, Connecticut, and Atlanta, Georgia, and have participated in mix shows and live remotes from clubs.
I also write, produce, and record music. Since the late 1980s, I have released songs that continue to resonate today. I run a record label called Diamond Life Music and Media, which I use to share my music and introduce the world to many talented artists.
Having worked in every aspect of the music industry, I take pride in helping others navigate this space and connect with people through the power of music. As a DJ, I have played at venues as large as the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and I have had the honor of DJing for millions of listeners. I have traveled the globe, performing in countries such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Honolulu, Cabo, Punta Cana, and the UK.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting is an essential skill to develop and incorporate into your life. Early in my journey, I noticed that DJ jobs seemed to persist and were always plentiful for me. However, if I wanted to become a good producer or writer, I had to force myself to pivot away from DJing and focus on making music. As I gained opportunities for remixes and recording, I realized that whatever I directed my energy toward would thrive. This principle seems to apply to all areas of my life—situations, relationships, and more.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Initially, I had to balance the task of making music for survival with learning how to create music for public consumption. Once you detach from the need to earn money through your craft, the true essence of your art emerges. This shift allows you to be creative and make music for yourself, which can then be appreciated by others if they choose to do so.
This is where I find myself today. I truly enjoy what I do, and honestly, I am amazed that music has provided me with the opportunity to travel the world and meet many of my favorite musicians and artists, ultimately forming friendships with them.
