We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darris Cue a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darris, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My mother is a big inspiration to me. She taught me how to cook as a teenager because she never wanted me to be dependent on my wife/girlfriend to feed me. I had no idea it would evolve to me providing catering and meals for others. It has really turned into a passion of mine. She also showed me how to create my own opportunities and not to wait on anyone else.
My dad showed me that it is never too late to pivot and reinvent yourself. I have seen him find passion in things I had no idea he was interested as he continues to age gracefully.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those who do not know, I got into the industry of private catering/private chef by circumstance and an opportunity. I was extended an invite by another chef to assist with an event and it took off from there. I provide dining experiences on the private level. It is from anything from Girl’s Night, graduation parties, baby showers, dinner for 2, or you are just hungry for some amazing food. My favorite problem to solve is creating a menu for my clients. Sometimes they know they want the experience but not sure exactly what they want to exactly indulge in. I always make sure I have a consultation to pick their brain to find out exactly what they like and don’t like. I also like to give them assurance that food is the one thing they don’t have to worry about when they choose me. I am proud that the majority of my clientele are repeat guests and/or from a recommendation. Good news travels faster than you think.

How did you build your audience on social media?
The best way to build your audience is to be consistent with engaging with your followers/friends as well as making your own posts. People appreciate those are genuinely themselves online as well as in person. I am a foodie first so I love to engage about food often as well as my love for music. Also it costs nothing to be kind. The internet can be a mean place at times if your algorithm isn’t configured correctly. So anytime folks compliment me, I do my best to thank them or at least acknowledge the comment.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes. One book in particular is called “Who Moved My Cheese?” It is definitely something I have thought about revisiting soon. It gave me a great outlook on being proactive and being aware of the ever changing climate of our economy. That book is really ahead of its time. I read it almost 20 years ago and alot its core principles still make a difference today.
