We recently connected with Taylor Medows and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Taylor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I think the biggest risk I have ever taken was moving to Austin. I knew no one here, never really lived alone or lived more than an hour away from my hometown. I moved here for a job I had absolutely no experience in and was way under qualified for. I was fired two weeks later.
This is what lit the fire under me to turn Mindful Medows from a blog to a real life wellness experience.
Taylor, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started practicing yoga when I was 18 and have been teaching yoga for about 3 years now. Mindful Medows is my private yoga business where I offer private sessions, yoga for events and host retreats. I just got back from Guatemala, where I hosted a very fun retreat. I think what sets me apart from other retreat host is that I really value experiences and culture over money. All my retreats are created to give the guest a genuine experience and feel for the place we are in. The last thing I want a guest to feel is like a tourist. I am young, and most of my clients are around my age as well, so I work really hard to try to provide the best experience for the cheapest price. I think everyone needs to travel a bit and learn about the world because it makes you a better human. So if I can get 12 people to experience different cultures and learn something that betters themselves through that, that is payment enough for me.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have had to pivot many times in my life, but the most recent pivot was moving from teaching yoga full time to only a few times a week. I was in the studio teaching a little too much and was getting physically and mentally drained. My passion was being diminished by exhaustion so I had to make a change. In order to take care of myself, I moved to only teaching a few times in the studio and focus mostly on private sessions, events and retreats. So far, I already feel more aligned
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think the most influential thing that has helped me build my reputation is consistency. For the first year and a half I was in Austin, I taught over 20 classes a week and hosted 3 retreats. I met so many people by doing this and became a person people could always count on for yoga whenever they needed it. Even though I am not in the studio nearly as much, I still provide many opportunities for my students to practice with me and connect with me outside of the studio setting.
