We recently connected with Ceerica Allen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ceerica, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I actually started as a fashion marketing major at SCAD Atlanta, so my background was really rooted in branding, beauty/fashion, and understanding the consumer. As I started taking more technical courses in Adobe, I naturally began applying those same design principles into graphic design. It wasn’t something I planned from the start, it kind of evolved as I got more curious and wanted to understand design on a deeper level within an industry I already knew well.
A lot of my learning came from just being hands on. Testing things, studying other designers, and applying what I was seeing in real time. I was always trying to understand not just what looked good, but why it worked and how it connected back to the audience.
Looking back, I think I could have sped things up by putting myself in more environments where I was getting consistent feedback. I learned a lot through trial and error, which helped shape my style, but having more direct input earlier on would have helped me refine faster.
The most essential skills for me have been understanding design fundamentals, having a strong sense of problem solving, and being able to think from the user’s perspective. Not just designing for aesthetics, but making sure what I create is clear, functional, and actually useful.
One of the biggest obstacles was access. Early on I didn’t always have direct exposure to other designers or structured teams, so I had to be intentional about finding ways to grow on my own. But that ended up working in my favor because it forced me to be more resourceful and take ownership of my development.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a brand designer and creative who focuses on helping businesses show up in a way that feels clear, intentional, and true to who they are. I originally started as a fashion marketing major at SCAD Atlanta, so my foundation was always rooted in branding, beauty/fashion, and understanding the consumer. As I got more into the technical side of design, I began applying those same principles to graphic design and that’s really where things started to take shape for me.
Over time, I realized I wasn’t just interested in making things look good. I was more focused on helping people understand how to use design to their advantage. A lot of the clients I work with aren’t designers, so part of my role is simplifying the process, removing the overwhelm, and creating solutions that actually make their day to day easier.
I provide a mix of brand identity work, marketing and sales materials, packaging, and overall creative direction. Most of the problems I solve come down to clarity. A lot of brands either don’t know how to communicate what they offer or they’re doing too much visually and it creates confusion. I help strip things back, focus on what matters, and build something that feels cohesive and easy to use across the board.
What sets me apart is how I think about design. I’ve always believed less is more, but more importantly, design should work. It should have a purpose, it should make sense, and it should support the business, not just sit there and look nice. I also take pride in the fact that I don’t just deliver and disappear. I like to make sure my clients actually understand what they have and feel confident using it moving forward.
What I’m most proud of is the growth. Not just in the work, but in how I think, how I approach challenges, and how I continue to evolve. There were times early on where I had to figure a lot out on my own, and now being in a position where I can not only create but also teach and guide others is something I don’t take lightly.
If there’s anything I’d want people to know, it’s that my work is rooted in intention. I’m not here to overcomplicate things or follow every trend. I care about creating solutions that last, that feel aligned, and that actually help people move forward in their business or whatever they’re building.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part is seeing something that started as an idea actually come to life and do what it was intended to do. It’s one thing to design something that looks good, but it’s different when you can see it out in the real world and know it’s making an impact.
I also really value seeing the work translate into success for the client or the end user. Whether that’s better engagement, stronger brand presence, or just making something easier for them to use, that’s what makes it worth it. It’s not just about creating, it’s about knowing what you created is working.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think earlier on I would have really benefited from more access to mentorship and honest feedback. A lot of my growth came from figuring things out on my own, which helped me become resourceful, but it also meant I spent more time than I probably needed to going through trial and error.
I also wish I tapped into more creative communities sooner. Being around other designers, seeing how they think, how they approach problems, and even how they present their work would have helped me level up faster.
Outside of that, just having a better understanding of the business side of design earlier would have made a big difference. Things like pricing, positioning, and communicating value are just as important as the work itself, and that’s something I had to learn over time through experience.
