We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Hurley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
For me, it all started from when I was really young, where I would begin by performing in stage plays and musicals to help initially get me started on my path to acting in film or television. However at some time as I grew up and took a hiatus from my dream of acting due to having a job and other life responsibilities, I developed a natural God-given sense of editing as I tampered and experimented with video projects particularly on YouTube. It was that exact moment I realized I could do two different amazing skills in the film industry and really wanted to pursue this!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So over a decade ago, I met and befriended a man named Ron Rossmann (who would become my mentor and father figure) at a comic convention who shared my passion and nostalgia for different film genres and we bonded over so much that we knew that together we could make filming our own movies possible!
So we formed our own production company “Be Your Own Hero Productions” and have been producing so many projects ever since! And while there were many different challenges in these productions, it helped myself and our team mature and grow. And now, we are all like one big family! Our recent film, “You’re It” (that I helped with editing, sound and performed as a SWAT officer) has been our most successful hit to date, which I am most proud of the hard work we put into that production!
Now outside of acting or editing film projects, I have also built a reputation as an independent freelance editor particularly for crafting trailers and demo reels. Whenever a client needs help setting up a video for casting agencies, I use my natural talents with my sharp eyes in the editing room to create something unique and engaging for them to use! It always feels good knowing that I can help these talented artists get their names out there and receive the notoriety they deserve. And for over a couple of years now, I have done a vast amount of reels for so many creative people, especially for my colleague and brother figure, actor Paul Hurley (no blood relation, LOL), so he can vouch for me!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The exposure. When I’m building my name and reputation on a project, just the fact that when people are seeing the hard work my team and I have poured our souls into these productions and are sharing them around, the opportunities keep growing!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I truly want to leave behind a legacy of dedication and commitment when I’m long gone. Both in life and in film. So when I get offered chances to work with many talented individuals with creative visions, no matter what field they are in, I want to do my part in making their dreams become reality, no matter how big or small.
