Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Barlow. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
My clients found a beautiful home and fell in love with it immediately. Properties were moving fast in the area, so I encouraged them to trust the process and make a strong offer. What followed was intense.
On inspection day, we had ten inspectors there at the same time. The home needed attention — the seller hadn’t kept up with maintenance — but overall the bones were solid, but in need of some costly repairs. That’s when things got complicated. The seller didn’t have representation and had only hired a broker to handle the paperwork, which meant I had to negotiate directly with her while also educating her on escrow, property values, and material disclosures. It became a delicate balance between being genuinely understanding of her situation and fighting hard for my buyers.
We went back and forth on repair requests multiple times over several weeks. My clients were anxious the whole time, worried they wouldn’t be able to get a fair deal given how much pushback we were facing. But we got there. When they found out the seller had agreed to our second round of repair requests, they were surprised and so grateful.
What made it even more rewarding was that the seller was also able to move forward and find her next home. Everyone got their new beginning. I was emotional at closing — that kind of trust from is exactly why I love what I do.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jessica Barlow, a Real Estate Agent with Compass based in San Diego. Originally from Brazil, I chose San Diego as my home and never looked back. I specialize in beach and coastal properties, working with everyone from first-time buyers to seasoned investors, but I also help lots of families looking for more space, good schools, and great neighborhoods through San Diego.
I came into this industry because I genuinely love connecting people with homes that change their lives. For me personally, owning homes in San Diego has been a huge part of building the life I always wanted — and helping my clients achieve that same goal is what drives me every single day.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just open doors and write contracts. I’m a full advocate for my clients from the first conversation to closing day and beyond. I manage the details, the emotions, the negotiations, and the unexpected curveballs that come up in nearly every transaction. Real estate can be stressful, and my job is to make sure my clients feel supported and informed every step of the way — even when things get complicated.
I’m most proud of the trust my clients place in me, especially through the hard transactions. When someone hands you one of the biggest financial decisions of their life and says “I trust you,” that means everything. I take that seriously every single time.
What I want people to know about working with me is simple: I will always fight for you, I’ll be honest with you even when it’s not what you want to hear, and I won’t stop until we get to the finish line together.

How’d you meet your business partner?
The story of how I met my business partner Bob Ruane is one of my favorites. My husband Justin and I were house hunting and had found a really cool place downtown with a private rooftop deck. I was ready to move forward, but Justin looked at me and said, “I really want to live in Mission Beach.” He had already done his research and told me, “This guy Bob is the best realtor in Mission Beach — he sells the most homes there, he’s a local, and you should work with his team.”
We started looking in Mission Beach, and after a year and a half we finally found our home there. And guess whose office was right across the street? Bob Ruane’s. It was like the Secret and visualization actually working.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’m originally from Brazil, and resilience has been the thread running through my entire life. I moved here over twenty years ago, which took a lot — starting from scratch in a new country, navigating language barriers, and rebuilding everything from the ground up. It wasn’t easy.
But over the past years, watching that journey evolve into what I do now — working as a real estate agent, building a business in Mission Beach, helping families and individuals accomplish their dreams — it feels literally like the American Dream. I get to live on the beach, work with incredible clients, and help them achieve goals that once felt impossible to me too. That experience of starting with nothing and building something real? That’s what gives me the empathy and determination to fight for my clients every single day. I know what it takes to get there.
