Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matt Ehnes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Matt, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
While making a living from your favorite pasttime can be one of the greatest privileges in life, it also comes with its own set of unique challenges. When work and passion are blended, the fire of the passion can begin to dull. Passion projects have been absolutely paramount to me to help mitigate this problem. Currently, the most meaningful project I’ve been working on is a travel brand that I started with a friend, called Finding Detours. In it, we work with various tourism boards around the world and highlight the lesser known stories that give these locations their personalities.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a storyteller and a firm believer that photos can be a way to show how you live, not a performance you give for the camera. My journey into this craft was driven by a deep draw toward human connection and the way a single frame can hold the weight of an entire memory. I was lucky to learn this about myself early in life and I haven’t looked back since. Today, I provide cinematic, bold wedding imagery and videography for couples who are brave enough to celebrate on their own terms. Whether we are on a mountaintop in Montana or a quiet forest clearing, I view my work as a form of memory preservation where the environment acts as a character to elevate the atmosphere and amplify the emotion.
The core problem I solve for my clients is the performance trap. Many couples fear their wedding will feel like an endless photoshoot, so I provide a calm, grounded presence that allows them to shift their focus from perfection to presence. My approach blends structure with spontaneity; I give direction when they need it and space when they don’t, ensuring they stay tucked into the honest emotion of the moment. I am most proud of the trust I build with my couples and the fact that my work allows them to feel every moment twice. What sets my brand apart is this balance of striking, soulful visuals and genuine, unscripted storytelling. I want them to know that real beats perfect every single time, and I am here to ensure their visual legacy reflects exactly who they are without compromise.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation has been built on the simple but vital practice of staying genuinely invested in the people behind the images. In an industry that can sometimes feel transactional, I’ve made it my mission to ensure my clients feel seen and supported well beyond the technical requirements of the job. I’ve always been willing to go the extra mile, whether that means scouting a remote location at dawn or being the calm anchor during a stressful moment on the wedding day. For me, client satisfaction isn’t just about delivering a gallery, but is about fostering the deep, authentic connection we all deserve.
By prioritizing the relationship as much as the result, I’ve created an environment where trust can flourish. My couples know that I am not just a vendor showing up to check boxes, but a dedicated partner who is truly rooting for their story. This commitment to being emotionally present and consistently reliable has allowed word of mouth to grow naturally. People remember how you made them feel long after the day is over, and I think that dedication to high level care and intentionality is what has truly solidified my place in this market.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Building a fully functional creative business doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly didn’t start with a polished studio and a full calendar. For me, resilience was forged in the years of “the grind” where I was balancing the demands of a full time job with my passion for photography. I would spend forty hours a week at my regular job just to fund my equipment and keep the lights on, only to spend my weekends and evenings offering free sessions and scouting locations.
Those early years were defined by sacrifice. There were countless social events missed and a lot of personal time traded for editing sessions at a desk. However, that period was vital because it taught me how to run a business with grit and intentionality. It wasn’t about instant success; it was about laying a foundation of trust and quality. That experience of working twice as hard to bridge the gap between where I was and where I wanted to be is exactly what makes me value the business I have today. It reminded me that a visual legacy isn’t just about the final image, but the heart and hard work you pour into the process.
It is also important to note that that kind of sacrifice is often still demanded.
