We were lucky to catch up with A.Shoaib Khan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi A.Shoaib, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I don’t think necessarily wanting to start my career earlier is what I wish though that certainly could be of benefit I rather feel being more engaged and open with the creative process is what I hoped I’d done.
I lost so much time to closing myself off and not allow expression through that it probably did some immeasurable intangible damage to my now creative processes. Mainly in the expression of emotion.
Currently I feel more like myself than ever before and I probably just deprived myself of feeling that way sooner.
Starting sooner would probably have given me a clearer creative voice, in the words of Crystal Castles “trade comfort for identity”.
That all being said we are who we are and our lived experiences are our own. It’s what make us unique so I am okay with how things turned out.

A.Shoaib, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well my name is Abdullah Shoaib Khan, Im a writer, director and assistant director from Pakistan. I moved to L.A about 4 years ago and graduated last year from New York Film Academy. Since then I’ve been steady working as an Assistant Director and trying to work on my own scripts as well.
I think what distinguishes me is my ability to make everyone feel comfortable working at their most efficient selves.
This comes with clear lines of communication, effective work flows and acknowledgement and praise of a job well done.
In the macro scale it will be my ability to organize productions in a natural progression that streamlines everyone’s work and efforts.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely, so my favorite movie is Donnie Darko. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it and it’s comforted me. The same could be said about most Studio Ghibli movies or a few other key pieces of media for me.
The goal is to give to others the same feeling of comfort, escape and inclusivity that those pieces did for me.
If I could be involved in the creative processes for something like that then I’ll be an extremely happy artist at least for a good time being.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Other creatives.
The process of filmmaking is so expansive and catered to collaboration that having more people, talent and thoughts only lead to the end result being a more well rounded piece.
Back home I can’t say I knew many creatives or people in purely creative fields however now I am surrounded by them and they constantly offer motivation, inspiration and support.
