Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Myriam Cavalli. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Myriam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Personal experience, development and self-discipline were essential in my case. As a Vocal Coach and Performer, I have responsibilities towards my students.
They see me as an example of what they’d like to be or to do. I am a partial living proof that their dreams can come true.
I’ve been a Disney Princess a Rock Lead Vocalist, a Musical Theatre character. Some people don’t even think of doing this job as an option because of culture or family desire and – let’s face it – the hard competition.
So when a 4 year old comes to session or an 8 year old or a 14 year old, they are really looking out to me and I know this simply because their mothers tell me. They are so kind and loving and they always text me how important and how positive my influence is for their little ones. They tell me after a few sessions with me, they can see their daughters or sons much more confident which is A BIG DEAL considering their in the age of great changes, both physically and mentally. I am very happy of this.
Maybe believing in my teaching skills and in myself more at the beginning of this career pivot would have made my process slightly faster. I am talking a few months faster probably, however, I DO NOT regret taking my time in starting my Vocal Coaching & Mentoring business. For 2 simple reasons: 1. My doubts in being a good teacher really pushed me to prepare as best as I could – I am a perfectionist. 2. The extra time and starting slow really helped me focus on my own strengths, on what I could offer to my students and finally, helped me shape my own Singing Method of which I AM INCREDIBLY PROUD OF.
As everything, you need to start from somewhere and running faster doesn’t necessary mean you’ll reach what you need. As I always say to my students: Taking baby steps can make miracles. And so far I have not been proved wrong luckly.
These are the first 4 skills I believe a Good Vocal Coach should have. The other 6 will be written in my coming book.
1. Experience – Both in performing and teaching.
Vocal Coaches need practical knowledge and familiarity with the material they wish to teach.
If they have never been doers, they’ll have no idea how to guide you and that’s simply due to the real meaning of the word experience: ‘a direct observation as knowledge fundations on a subject.’
NB: the level of experience of your coaches will reflect on their fees and services offered.
2. Knowledge & Clarity – Communication is key.
Vocal Coaches could be great doers with tons of experience, however, if their way of explaining is unclear or their method is not accessible, they’ll only end up confusing students even more.
This is why, for example, you’ll prefer some tutors rather than others – they may have a way of explaining which makes even the hardest subject simple to you or they simply match your learning style.
3. Being organised – All aspects included (even Time Management).
From basic responsibilities as scheduling the right slot to the right student at the right time on the right day TO keeping a studio nice and tidy – es. for face to face sessions.
A Vocal Coach as any other lecturer, tutor or teacher should create long term programmes and plan their sessions in a structured, functional and flexible way, in order to respect the age, the level, the needs and the goals of each student.
By instance, I ALWAYS prefers to create nice and solid foundations at the very beginning to then continue the programme smoothly Empaty.
4. Patience & Kindness – I’ve heard so many stories about bad Vocal Coaches. The worst thing is that these bad stories are considered traumas for students. So working on Voice goes deeper than people would imagine.
Time, Work, Daily Routine and Health have been obstacles for me in being able to do more. In different moments of my coaching career I found that If I didn’t have my lower back injury, I could have been able to be more productive in some days. As if I didn’t have to cook, I could have spend that time writing more of my book. However, I value eating fresh food everyday rather than take-away. I very rarely do that and most of the time it is because it’s my first day off in literally 3 eeks of non stopping work. Things like this but we need to have a life over work too. Balancing work with social time with self love time…it’s incredibly important!
Myriam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
EXTRACTED FROM ‘THE VISUAL VOICE BOOK’ – coming soon
Myriam Cavalli (born September 26, 1997) is a British-Italian Performer, Vocal Coach and Creative with positive vibes, alternative style and a powerful four-octave vocal range. She has experience on stage as a Singer, Actor, Dancer, and Model and has also worked backstage as a Special Effects Make-up Artist, Stage Manager and Assistant Director for both Film and Theatre Productions.
Cavalli began her career at a very young age.
Noticing the child’s high interest in performing arts and her positive attitude towards music, the family decided to fully support her passion and when she was only 3 years old, she auditioned for TV programs as ‘Lo Zecchino D’oro’ and got her very first microphone from her grandmother.
At the beginning, she was a self-taught artist who trained daily in her room (her neighbours confirm this statement) and getting influenced by her favorite international artists of the time such as Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Italian artists as Matia Bazar, Fiorella Mannoia, Anna Oxa and the great Mia Martini (who was from her same South Italian region: Calabria).
At the age of 8, Myriam wrote her first song and by the age of 11 she had joined a gospel choir. That’s when she started to receive more feedback about her voice and soon after, she signed up for private singing lessons, courses and events first in her city, and then escalated gradually to regionals and nationals.
At the average age of 15, she attended important events and auditions such as X Factor Italy, Festival di Castrocaro, Festival di Piombino, Tour Music Fest, Notre Dame de Paris, Premio Mia Martini and more, getting the chance to meet and study with great personalities of the Italian scene as M. Vessicchio B. and M. Gazze’ F.
In the meantime, she was also committing to weekly training and national competitions of Ballroom, Latin American Dancing and Boxing – nontheless, her father is one of the greatest boxing coaches in Italy at the Pugilistica Eagles Catanzaro (check it out: https://www.facebook.com/pugilatononeviolenza.catanzaro/ )
At the age of 17 and after getting her Diploma in Biology and Chemistry, Myriam moved to London where she had to face great difficulties.
Living alone in a big metropolis with a different language and culture was a big challenge but it was nothing compared to the jobs she took on in order to pay for her musical studies. The alarm was off everyday at 3am, no matter if it was a weekday or not; her duties were often as disgusting as cleaning rubbish rooms and the sacrifices were way more than she expected. She got promoted a few times in one year, going from Pret a Manger Team Member (filling 100 baguettes in less than 10 minutes) to Hot Chef and from Front of House to Team Leader. 40-48h of work per week just to be able to study what she loved: Voice. That’s why when her boss asked her to become a Shop Manager and to “forget about attending a Musical Theatre University”, she left in no time. “Starting this young would make you have a great career in the food chain based all around the West End, which you love so much” he said. She just knew that was her cue. Her determination and her ambition stayed strong and after a few months her sacrifices started to pay off. Cavalli started to attend short courses at colleges such as Urdang Academy, BIMM and ACM to then graduate in Musical Theatre at the London College of Music – UWL and keep on training* privately with top West End personalities such as Alice Fearn and Sophie Isaacs.
“It felt like being in an 80’s song: a kid moving from a small city to a huge metropolis, working hard and cleaning toilets just to pursue her music dream. We often underestimate how powerful our dreams can make us.” -Myriam Cavalli
In 2019, Myriam launched her career as an independent singer-songwriter and produced many different original songs, including collaborations with international DJs and Artists and reaching over 150K listeners all over the world.
In 2020, straight after graduating in Musical Theatre and during a global pandemic, she got signed by her first agent and got hired by TUI as a Lead Vocalist and Dancer and moved to Ibiza. Around the same period, a friend reached out to her, unexpectedly asking for private singing lessons. In her mind, she had the answer and that was a no! She didn’t believe she had teaching skills at all.
She thought she wasn’t ready for the great responsibility of dealing with other people’s dreams, insecurities and untrained voices. ‘That’s hard work!’ She said to herself. Then she remembered that nothing up to that point felt EASY, however, still led her to a happy, fulfilled and satisfied present.
If there is something the incredibly competitive industry of Music can teach, it is how to manage the infinite amount of rejections you are going to get! Myriam had made her motto out of all these No:
“Be the best version of yourself.
Work everyday to transform yesterday’s failures into tomorrow’s successes.” -Myriam Cavalli
Now, who was she to say NO to herself!?
Sometimes, all that’s needed to start a new challenging adventure, a career pivot is a little push by someone we love, a supporter.
Myri always had her n.1 supporter, her wise and extremely calm and positive husband, Lorenzo, who is the most disciplined and determined person she knows.
Another strong supporter of her teaching career, aside from her family, is her friend Paul.
Having a friend who believed so deeply in her abilities, trusting her almost blindly—so much so that he helped her find her very first students when she had no experience at all—was truly extraordinary. For that, she will always remain profoundly grateful.
“ Try. The worst that can happen is they’ll say no.
But only once you’ve tried, you’ll know for sure if it did or didn’t work. At that point, you’ll find another way.” -Lorenzo Bruno
Most of the time, people don’t learn a new skill or don’t go for a new adventure, a new chapter of their life because they are scared to invest time and money into a new self or because they think there will be time to do it in another moment. They keep waiting and procrastinating* until they realise time has flown and they can’t go back anymore. Myriam thought: ‘Don’t let that be you!’ Reality is: it’s now or never.
Italians say: “the train only passes once.” Meaning: do things when you have the opportunity without overthinking or finding excuses.
Now, Cavalli’s new mission wasn’t just to be a good performer but also a good Vocal Coach.
The next day, she was at her laptop writing down a programme, creating step by step lessons for her first student ever, Nic.
Today, Myriam Cavalli is one of the finest London Vocal Coaches.
Her ability to identify unhealthy vocal habits and guide her students to correct and adjust them by providing direct feedback and effective solutions is incredible, as much as her skills in planning, organising and executing a bespoke training path for each student.
It was in the middle of an intense belting session that one of her students referred to her with the title of ‘Doctor of Sound.’
Myri is a very friendly, energetic and determined Vocal Coach with a positive attitude and able to guide students with passion and enthusiasm. Since 2019, she has taught more than 100 private students of all ages and levels, and over 13,000 people in group sessions from across the world, helping them achieve their goals, whether these were auditions for prestigious Universities such as LCM, ICMP, BIMM, UWL or for events, theatre productions and talent shows cush as Open Mic UK, Mamma Mia (West End) and The Voice UK.
She focuses on providing excellent stylistic versatility of various musical genres: pop-rock, jazz-blues, soul-gospel, edm-techno and musical theatre while maintaining high control of vocal technique and personality.
In her lessons, she combines all the different exercises, hacks and tips collected during over 15 years of professional studies all over Europe with more than 20 different tutors.
Everything she found useful, helpful and interesting was written down as a schematic script in various Google Documents.
These documents have been tested over time, continuously refined and improved, and have helped shape Myriam’s own singing method: The Visual Voice Method (VVM).
This innovative approach to singing blends four different elements into a cohesive system designed to develop vocal control, vocal technique, and overall performance.
The method has proven to help students improve at nearly twice the pace of a traditionally structured class. The book is in the making and it will be released in the near fututre. “I’ll help you Visualise The Invisible: The Instrument Voice!”
– Myriam Vocal Coach
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve been teaching for over 6 years now, and for every year that passes, I get more and more convinced that this is my call, my purpose in life: helping individuals get closer to the instrument Voice by understanding its structure, discovering its power, unlocking its real potential and respecting it at all times. Helping others achieve their goals, whether they are amateurs who just want to improve while having fun or professionals in need of motivation and guidelines. I feel like a mirror that reflects and spreads confidence, support and positive vibes people need to embark on this life-changing journey, which is DISCOVERING THEIR TRUE VOICE.
I’ve worked with people who had strokes and could barely speak and move – that was emotional.
I’ve worked with ladies from the Middle East. They grow in areas and cultures that force them to stay quiet. Areas of war and constant fear. They felt completely disconnected from their Voice and felt like they had no voice at all – helping them find their voice and hear them singing was powerful for the soul.
I’ve worked with people who had traumas. Walls so strong and tall that they felt unbreakable. Together, we broke these walls, and we built healthy habits – that felt liberating.
I improve with their improvement, and I’m not really sure what I am able to do until I see their body posture changing, their facial expressions light up, and their soul getting lighter and freer.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being a Freelancer allows me to be my own Boss. I get to decide (up to a certain point) my schedule, my holidays, my times and being a working performer with auditions and agents, that’s unbelievably useful. I’m incredibly grateful for what I was able to build by myself and for what I have today. However, some days – as for everyone – feel heavier than others.
Having no income stability does raise my anxiety levels sometimes.
Having no daily routine makes me feel disoriented sometimes.
Always working when others aren’t is hard to face on some days.
Most of the time, I work until late in the evening, 10pm or if it is for performing it can go up to 00 and 1am that is exciting on some days and more tiring on others.
I may be working on most weekends when friends and family gather together. That feels like I’m missing out sometimes.
Most of my dinners have been cold food in a Tupperware, alone on the tube… no fun but it was definitely calming.
BUT I LOVE my job and I love how it makes me feel every day.
Even on my lower day, I walk into the session, and I get to feel much better after (obviously, I do not tend to show to students which days are as their experience on my coaching should always feel like a 15/10 to them).
“Leave your worries outside the room, as this is your YOU time” – Myriam Cavalli
I get to see the real power of Music on me and on others EVERY DAY. And believe if I say that Music is pretty POWERFUL.
Music is truly healing for the soul and I am convinced it is one of the only natural medicines humans have to stay positive and colourful in a world that is becoming unbearable.
Music keeps our inner child alive so we can continue to appreciate the small things around us.
It is really magical.
“Music allows us to stay colourful in a grey life.”
-Myriam Cavalli
Moreover, MAGIC is also a term often used to refer to Music and anything or anyone linked to it.
This highlights how humans experience art as an extraordinary – almost supernatural power able to evoke emotions and create where nothing existed before.
“Artists are the closest thing to Magic on this planet.”
-Stranger lady met on the tube
I don’t know about you BUT if I wasn’t a creative myself, I would do whatever it takes to be considered a magical creature – and I’ll possibly be a unicorn of course ahahahah
