We recently connected with Jasmin Pannu and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmin, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I love my path. I was able to study psychology and sociology and work in marketing analytics and advertising before pursuing art full-time. I feel I was able to bring a lot of what I learned in school and the workplace and apply it to my creative practice. That way I was able to position myself as more than just a skilled artist. With that said, there’s really no wrong way to do it. I think the pillars that contributed to my career growth as an artist are good communication, life-long skill learning and an openness to pivoting.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Yes, of course! My name is Jasmin Pannu and I’m an award-winning artist. My full-service art studio covers murals (hand painted and digital), digital art and augmented reality mediums, and specialty hand-painted works (everything from custom 10f1 shoes, sculptures and installations). In my practice, I’ve been able to travel internationally for projects (I was Artist-in Residence in Buenos Aires, St. Croix and France), teach art programs in schools, libraries and community centers and do a bit of speaking and consulting in between.
The range and variety keeps me going and my career as an artist and studio owner is ever-evolving. My favourite and most impactful projects have definitely been those that include public art (murals), community and teaching. During my month long artist residency in St. Croix, I taught youth to paint a mural, I painted a mural for the Caribbean Museum of the Arts and lived, worked and consulted with the community while there.
I continue to be based out of Toronto and hope to have a solo exhibition of my latest paintings collection this summer!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The philosophy that guides my art are the symbols within my artist signature- the three triangles represent a process: to challenge, to create, to transform. Through my art, whether it’s a 2-story painted mural on the side of a building or digital artwork made for a brand’s art campaign, I try to challenge what exists, create something new, and transform people, place or purpose through the artwork.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I went from very structured corporate life, to absolutely no structure at all as an artist-entrepreneur, haha. It’s not as fun as it seems! I pretty quickly realized that my creativity and work needed a balance of structure to feel fulfilling and sustainable. Once I brought some discipline into my time and work, I was able to enjoy my freedom much more. Life’s about the parameters you choose, I suppose!
