We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Horysn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Horysn below.
Hi Horysn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My EP Toska is probably one of my most recent meaningful projects! I created it during a time of rediscovery and grievance of myself. I had experienced so much turmoil, so much resistance, and inauthenticity to who I truly was and who I had become. Toska was a way of speaking my truth in a timeline that mapped out my emotions.

Horysn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Horysn, I am a Texas born Northeast raised singer songwriter. I’ve always had an interest in making music or creating art. Honestly I had no idea or clue where to start; but I knew I had to start somewhere, and that somewhere for me was the good old singing apps, live platforms, and facebook creative writing groups!
The music industry is such a vast and competitive market. It’s hard to not to compare yourself to legends, upcoming artists, and established music genres.
In light of that it can be very easy to lose yourself in what you think people want to hear, and what you know you want to relay to your listeners.
It took some time for me, but one day I woke up decided I didn’t want to sound uniform, and I never could because that sound wasn’t for me.
As a black female artist in the industry it is almost expected of me to produce and create music in the RnB genre, and though I love RnB music I feel called to create more than just that.
I wish to use my writing and music as an expression of depth, emotion, human interaction, and life experiences, I think it would be pretty difficult to do so by putting myself in a general sound. I want to be the microphone to amplify life’s plot lines whether mine or others, thats truly the beauty to it all!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
To keep put it plainly “Comparison is the thief of joy” I can’t tell you how many times I would write and record something and then come across someone else’s work and say to myself my work no longer good enough. I grew up in a large family and always felt like I was competing for the attention of my parents. There was always someone doing something that could be considered more honorable than others, it can be disheartening and frustrating. I learned early on from that heavy feeling that living for the validation of others would always be an unsatiated high.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Connection! Nothing is more rewarding than be able to relate to my listeners or put into words someone’s thoughts or feelings.
