We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Patrick Steele a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick , thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I would say this business started many years ago when I was small. Ever since I was a kid I was always fascinated with technology. I still remember to this day taking apart Playstation’s just to see how they worked. Fast forward all these year and we’ve entered one of the largest technological revolutions in the history of tech, AI. AI has been around for years, its been in our smartphones, our GPS devices, even our computer but the AI we have now is different. It’s more complex and honestly freighting. When ChatGPT dropped it took all of a few minutes for me to login and try it out and truthfully it was a mess. It wasn’t something that warranted concern. At that time people everywhere were screaming it won’t replace your job. Fast forward three years later the room has gotten a lot quieter. I’ve built several applications with several different models and realized this technology changes fast. With my background in Science and technology the light finally clicked that at the rate this technology moves business and people need be able to keep up. That is where Microbiocol AI was born. I realized I could take my skills to businesses and people that would allow them to future proof themselves against a technology that doesn’t look like it goings to slow down but just getting started.

Patrick , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Starting Microbiocol AI started by simply looking around. Being a scientist you tend to be an observer. It kind of comes with the job and one of the observations I’ve made at almost every job I’ve ever worked at is that business moves really slow and the system they create can mean life or death for that business. There have been countless times I have seen multi million dollar clients walk right out the door due to poor systems inside several business. I have seen first hand the results of these losses. They are real and severe. The kind of serious where large groups of employees get walked out the door themselves. After repeated years of seeing this time and time again I realized that even though a business is running well from the outside the inside can be a mess and the leaders and staff may see the problem but they have no idea how to fix it.
With the rapid rise of AI many industries are simply not prepared. I’ve watched this tech go from putting out bloated code to building an entire application in minutes. As some that has worked in the biotechnology sector for over a decade I can honestly say most companies or businesses are not ready for the massive shift that is coming. That is where Microbiocol AI comes into play as an AI advising and application development firm we come in to optimize businesses to be better prepared when they are ready to make the shift to AI. Where we stand with AI is pivotal at this moment. If you haven’t seen the headlines AI is taking over jobs that hard working people used to do. Even though AI has rapidly gained in popularity most business are in the early adoption phases. Most companies have some AI but they haven’t touched the serious things such as client data, privacy polices, and the scariest part of it all aggregation of their databases. All of these are major concerns and currently large to small businesses are trying to figure out how to implement and adopt AI or fear getting left behind by their competitors.
We at Microbiocol AI want to relieve that stress by simply going into the business looking for the pain points and realistically addressing where AI can serve them best. We’ve seen so many companies go all in on AI only to learn that it’s not perfect nor will it ever be. It’s good but it’s not laying off half your workforce good. At Microbiocol AI we aim to encourage companies to have a more holistic approach to AI. Find the areas where it can maximize without minimizing people to do it. We believe AI is a powerful tool that can serve many businesses if done the right way. That’s why we focus on advising with people in mind and do our best to let clients know AI maximizing people’s skills is far better than replacing them with it.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That rules weren’t meant to be broken. Not saying we should be breaking rules but the ones you impose on yourself that limit you and growth then definitely . From the time we are born we are set on a path and influenced by people, family, friends, educational, or governmental to follow a set order of rules and that is great because it is through those rules we are able to become better people and build a productive and peaceful society. However, in the midst of these rules you can get lost by chasing things you never wanted. I believe that in order for anyone to be successful at building anything, business included. Everyday, I continue to unlearn that the rule of working for 65 years is the only way. Growing up in the Deep South your paths can be limiting and your outlook can stay small. I’ve had to unlearn how limiting I thought the world was due to limited amount of paths I’d seen from the place I was born. I know now that isn’t the case.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve been a store clerk, pharmacy technician, student, certified nurse assistant, tennis coach, photographer, biologist, and scientist. The one thing I can say is the life is all about pivoting. If you aren’t willing to pivot then you’ll never really know who you are and what you are capable of. Some things I’ve hated but while hating them I still learned valuable lessons that shaped my life that allowed me to move forward and obtain different things that I really love and enjoy. I guess the story is life itself is constantly pivot so put that foot forward and pivot with it sometimes.
