We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daisy Aisling a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daisy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
As of right now, I am earning a living practicing my art part time! Sadly not full time yet, but I am continuing to be patient, hopeful and overall trusting the process! It was definitely not like this from day one, it took about 3 years of consistency and hard work to even get to this part time milestone. What really helped me break through the mold was setting up my own Etsy shop. Having a one stop area of all your art really helps you gain traction! Having a partner who is well versed in product photography doesn’t hurt either! I also really preach the importance of networking! Knowing who is in your community is essential!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi there! My name is Daisy and I am the founder and designer of Psych XXX! Psych XXX is a psychedelic erotica zine meant to highlight an art form that is lost in time. My zine is fully designed and put together by me, assembled digitally in indesign! Each zine follows a loose outline, but each one is vastly different in style from issue to issue. You can expect a welcome page, an art and music recommendation article and a centerfold plus so many more surprises! I am currently on issue #5 and don’t plan on stopping!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Oh my goodness so many! The main one that comes to mind is any sort of archive! Whether it’s an online archive or in a library, you would be surprised at the amount of source material you can find! Lots of people find joy in archiving material so it can live on and continue to be used and circulated! So if you are needing source material or inspiration, do some research into seeing what you can find that is already out there!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Most definitely!! My main goal for the zine and my general art practice is to create a safe space for fellow weirdos out there! I am a self proclaimed weird girl and I find a lot of excitement in cultivating spaces for others to join and enjoy! This zine explores a lot of concepts that are often otherwise isolated in society. I want to create a non-judgemental zone for people to truly explore their desires and kinks freely! No one should be made to feel bad about what they simply want to practice!
