We caught up with the brilliant and insightful OTR Nick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
OTR , appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Growing up with sickle cell I always believed life itself was a risk, from doctors telling me I wouldn’t live past a certain age to multiple surgeries, I never wanted to live mediocre. From age 20 pursuing media and the music industry I knew putting my time, energy and resources into an entrepreneur career would be a big risk considering success isn’t promised and I have no time to waste. Everyday while I work towards success 10 years later I wake up and look at my wife and kids like this has to work, I have to leave a legacy for them regardless of what the circumstances are.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by OTR Nick, born in Atlanta,GA but growing up in Houston,Texas since age 11 I’ve always had a love for music. I got into the media industry by doing quick interviews with local artist on the north side of Houston, to growing the household name “Otrviews” throughout the state of texas, and most major cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta. The first artist to give me a major chance at success goes by “Sancho Saucy” also known as 1/2 of the Sauce Twinz. From working as his camera man to making a viral players ball documentary I achieved my first million views across social media platforms. Two years into my career I began to manage local artist in the Houston area to gain knowledge and build relationships with A&R reps from major labels to learning music marketing and what it takes to build an artist.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe hitting the underground music scene at a young age, working with as many upcoming artist as I could at the time, consistently doing interviews with artist I felt had a real chance at success helped build my reputation. So many artists I’ve came across within the last 10 years have gone on to become major record selling recording artist.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn in the industry is no matter how genuine a person may come across when you meet them, they have a goal that they are trying to reach so the relationship you build with them may be solely focused on what you can provide for them and not how good of a person you can be towards them. In this game it’s important to remove personal feelings/attachment and focus solely on the business.
