We recently connected with Gabrielle and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabrielle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
By all accounts, starting my freelance writing career in January 2017 was a big, life-changing risk, one that would set the stage for everything else. In January 2017, I had finished high school six months ago, just left Michigan, and knew I wanted to find my own way in the world.
Writing always came to me naturally…and fed my passion for communication and self-expression. In 2016, I wrote recreationally and even got published on smaller blogs. At 18 years old, I figured…if I’m good enough to get my work published on other people’s websites, then surely I’m good enough to make a career out of it.
Nearly 10 years later, I’m so glad I did.
But it was definitely a risk in the beginning. My strongest assets at the time were my innate writing talents, determination, and self-belief. I had to lean on this trifecta when people told me that freelance writing wasn’t a viable career path, that there was “no money” in it. I had to bet on myself even when I didn’t yet have years of experience, a published body of work, or a Google Knowledge Panel that recognized me as a freelance writer.
Starting my career at 18 was, by all accounts, a big risk…one that allowed me to have options, build a life for myself, and travel the world.

Gabrielle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Gabrielle Seunagal and I’ve worked professionally as a freelance writer since January 2017. I chose this line of work six months after finishing high school, banking on my writing talents, self-belief, and determination to get me to where I wanted to be.
In 2026, my work includes not just content writing, but also editing, SEO services, and AI article humanization. I’ve always been passionate about writing and content because these are the modes through which ideas are spread and communication happens.
Right now, a lot of debates about AI (and the role it’ll play in creative fields such as writing) are still underway. Based on my experience, AI exists as a tool that skilled creatives can use to make us better at what we already do. In other words, when used appropriately, AI is more of an asset than a liability.
For over nine years now, I’ve been privileged to work with clients on myriad projects: blog posts, on-page SEO improvement, marketing emails, article creation, and more. When writing content, I’ve covered across-the-board topics from elder care and politics to higher education marketing and scaling eCommerce brands.
I’m thankful for every project and client. Each has allowed me to hone my skills, learn new ones, and provide high-quality deliverables. In the world of freelancing, the ability to grow is paramount. It determines whether your career lasts for a few years vs. several decades.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
As a premier online marketplace for freelancers and clients to connect, Upwork is where my career started in 2017. Without fail, this platform has been my best source for not only finding new clients, but also maintaining years-long professional relationships.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Autonomy.
Without fail, setting my own schedule from anywhere in the world is the most rewarding aspect of freelance writing. Whether I’m in an airport or a Mulliri cafe, working on client projects and growing my writing career (without being tied to a specific location, time zone, or country) is invaluable.
