We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Tehlirian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I technically got my first non-friends-and-family client before I ever opened my own firm.
At the time, I was still an associate at another firm. I wasn’t responsible for bringing in business. I didn’t have a personal brand yet. But I had started posting on social media consistently — breaking down legal issues in plain English, sharing insights, and answering common questions people were too intimidated to ask a lawyer directly.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure anyone was really paying attention.
Then one day, I got a DM from someone I had never met. No mutual connections. No referral. They told me they’d been following my content and appreciated how clearly I explained things. They were dealing with a legal issue and wanted to know if I could represent them.
That message stopped me in my tracks.
Up until that moment, social media felt like effort without clear feedback. But this was tangible proof that someone out there not only saw the content — they trusted it.
I brought the matter into the firm. I handled the case. And when the engagement agreement was signed, I felt something shift.
It wasn’t just about the revenue. I wasn’t even the firm owner at the time.
It was the realization that I could generate business on my own.
That my voice carried authority.
That my knowledge translated into trust.
That I didn’t have to wait to be handed opportunities — I could create them.
That first client gave me confidence long before I had my own letterhead.
And when I eventually launched my own firm, I didn’t feel like I was starting from zero. I had already proven to myself that I could attract real clients — people who didn’t know me personally — just by showing up and sharing value.
That first dollar wasn’t just income.
It was independence in disguise.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a lawyer and founder of my own firm, driven by one core belief: the law should feel empowering, not intimidating. I’ve always been drawn to advocacy and strategy, and law gave me the opportunity to help people navigate high-stakes moments with clarity and confidence.
Early in my career, while working as an associate, I began sharing legal education content on social media — breaking down complex issues into plain language. That consistency led to clients finding me online, long before I opened my own firm. It showed me that modern legal practice is built on trust, communication, and visibility.
Today, I provide strategic legal representation and advisory services to individuals and businesses navigating important decisions, disputes, and growth phases. I don’t just solve legal problems — I help clients understand their position, minimize risk, and move forward with a clear strategy.
What sets me apart is how I communicate. I prioritize clarity over jargon and believe clients should feel informed, not overwhelmed. My brand is built on confidence, preparation, and approachability.
What I’m most proud of is building a practice rooted in credibility and connection — proving that showing up consistently, educating others, and leading with value truly works.
At the end of the day, I want clients to feel protected, prepared, and ten steps ahead.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When it came to funding my firm, I was fortunate in one key way — I had already built financial momentum before launching.
Prior to starting my own practice, I was a managing partner at my previous firm. In that role, I wasn’t just practicing law; I was involved in the business side — revenue, operations, client acquisition, and growth strategy. That experience allowed me to earn and, more importantly, to understand how a firm generates and sustains income.
Instead of rushing to launch, I was intentional. I saved aggressively. I treated my future firm like a real business long before it officially existed. I knew I wanted to start from a position of stability, not pressure.
So when it was time to open my doors, I didn’t need outside investors or loans. The initial capital came from the income I had earned and set aside while serving as managing partner. That gave me flexibility — I could invest in branding, infrastructure, and systems properly from day one rather than cutting corners.
More than the money itself, what truly funded my business was experience. I had already learned how to attract clients, manage cases, and operate a profitable practice. Financial capital matters — but operational knowledge is just as powerful.
By the time I launched, I wasn’t gambling. I was building on a foundation I had already helped create.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has been social media — specifically organic content.
What started as simply sharing legal insights and breaking down complex topics into plain language turned into a consistent pipeline of inbound inquiries. People follow for the education, but they hire because of the trust that builds over time. By the time someone reaches out, they often already understand how I think, how I communicate, and how I approach strategy.
What makes it powerful is that it’s not cold outreach. It’s not chasing. It’s attraction-based. Clients come in warm because they’ve been watching, learning, and evaluating long before they send that first message.
A close second is referrals — but even many of those trace back to social media. Someone shares a post. Someone tags a friend. Someone sends a video. The visibility compounds.
For me, the lesson has been simple: consistency builds credibility, and credibility builds clients.
