We were lucky to catch up with Cynthia Parks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I had been working in corporate for over 20 years. I was unhappy. I did not enjoy the work I was doing, I was stressed out and tired all the time. I was looking for something new but didn’t know what that was. Once I decided what I wanted to do, I was afraid to start my own business. It was a big decision. I had doubts about it and I didn’t have the confidence I needed to step out on my own. I felt like I couldn’t take the rat race anymore, so I did it. I stepped out and started my own business. I have been in business now for over 20 years and haven’t looked back.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I left corporate I started a cleaning business. I knew that I liked to clean, and was good at cleaning. It did not require a lot to get started. As the years passed by, I discovered that cleaning houses everyday was more than what I thought it would be. It was a lot of physical work and doing it every day was different from just doing it when I would clean my house.
There were people in my life that told me I had great organizing skills. I didn’t know that a professional organizer was a thing at that time. It was years later that I learned that I could become a professional organizer and organize people for a living. It took time for me to figure how to do this, how to charge and how to perform this service for others. So along with my cleaning business that I did full-time, I started organizing people part-time on the weekends. I later realized that organizing was my passion. After providing organizing services part-time for about 8 years, I finally decided 5 years ago that I wanted to provide organizing services full time.
What I think sets me apart from others is when I help my clients, there’s no judgment about their situation. A lot of the clients that I have helped are ashamed of their situation and that makes it hard for them to reach out and ask for help. When I am contacted to provide services, I let the client know that I’m coming to help them not judge them.
What I’m most proud of is that I have helped a lot of people that were anxiety-strickened and stressed out but once I came in to help it changed their life.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is my Google business page. Most of my clients found me on Google, read my reviews or looked at my website then contacted me for services.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele is providing great customer service, being professional and meeting my clients needs.
