We recently connected with Jade Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Jade, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started my business at 18 with nothing but a love for transforming spaces and a desire to create independence for myself. Cleaning was therapeutic for me it was one of the few things I could fully control. When a space was chaotic, I could bring it back to calm. That feeling stuck with me.
What began as helping friends and family quickly turned into referrals, then repeat clients, and eventually a real brand. I realized I wasn’t just cleaning , I was giving people peace of mind. In a fast-growing city like Nashville, busy professionals and Airbnb hosts needed reliability, detail, and someone who truly cared about their space.
The difference was intention. I built Clean Start Nashville around trust, presentation, and consistency. I treated every home like it mattered, because it does. I knew it would work because a clean space isn’t just about appearance. It shifts energy, reduces stress, and gives people a fresh start.
What started as a teenage hustle became proof that when you build with care and confidence, people feel it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Jade Johnson, the founder of Clean Start Nashville. I started the business at 18 with a simple goal: create independence for myself doing something I genuinely enjoyed. What began as cleaning homes for friends and family quickly evolved into a full-service residential, Airbnb, and boutique property cleaning company.
I got into this industry because I saw a real need. In a fast-growing city like Nashville, people are busy professionals, hosts, and families don’t always have the time or energy to maintain their spaces the way they want to. I realized I wasn’t just offering cleaning services; I was offering peace of mind, reliability, and presentation.
Clean Start Nashville provides residential cleanings, Airbnb turnovers, move-outs, and corporate or boutique property services. What sets us apart is intention. We focus on detail, consistency, and professionalism. I’ve always treated this like a brand, not just a side hustle. From the way we communicate to the way a finished space feels, everything is about creating a true “fresh start.”
The problem we solve goes beyond mess. We help reduce stress. A clean environment shifts energy, increases productivity, and helps people feel more in control of their lives.
What I’m most proud of is that I built this from the ground up as a young Black woman in business. No shortcuts, no blueprint, just vision, work ethic, and faith. I want potential clients to know that when they book with Clean Start Nashville, they’re not just hiring a cleaning service. They’re partnering with someone who genuinely cares about their space and their experience.

Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2023, as the economy started to feel uncertain post-pandemic, I had to make a difficult but strategic decision. At the time, I had a small team, but I began noticing shifts in client demand and overall spending. Rather than overextend financially or risk instability, I chose to downsize and operate independently.
That pivot required humility and discipline. Letting go of growth for the sake of sustainability isn’t always glamorous, but it was necessary. I shifted my focus to retaining my most loyal and high-value clients and intentionally limited my workload to what could both sustain my lifestyle and protect the integrity of my brand.
That season taught me that scaling isn’t always about expanding sometimes it’s about refining. I learned how to protect profit margins, prioritize quality over quantity, and build a business that could withstand economic shifts. It wasn’t a step back; it was a recalibration.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
One of my closest calls came during our contract with a boutique hotel in downtown Nashville. We had worked together since 2019, but as the pandemic’s impact hit hospitality, the hotel began struggling financially. At one point, their payment was delayed and that payment directly affected my ability to cover payroll.
Instead of panicking, I relied on preparation. I had built a business savings cushion specifically for moments like that. I covered two full weeks of payroll from reserves while waiting for the deposit, which came about a week late. My team never missed a check.
That experience taught me a powerful lesson: growth is important, but protection is essential. As a leader, your responsibility is to plan ahead, especially when others are depending on you.
