We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eleni Bandy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eleni below.
Eleni, appreciate you joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
The most important lesson I’ve learned throughout past jobs is that every position is teaching you something. You may even make connections that will help you further down the road. My first job out of college helped me improve my photo and video skills and gave me an incredible mentor who I still do work with over three years after leaving that job. My time working as a Digital Campaign Manager strengthened my project management and client-facing skills, two very important skills for self-employment.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a photographer and videographer who specializes in brand campaigns, travel & tourism, events and weddings. I’ve always had a camera in my hand. I was (and still am) the girl making home movies about everything. That love has grown into helping brands and individuals tell their stories and capture their most special moments. From marketing campaign and project management to photography, videography, graphic design and creative direction, I’ve been involved in every part of the process. I’ve been the strategist, and I’ve been the maker. I produce content that makes people FEEL and captures what matters most. Projects in the lifestyle and tourism industries excite me the most.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I put money I’ve made from my full time job into things like equipment and subscriptions. I’ve acquired the basic gear I need to do good work and try not to spend more than I need to. Your skill matters more than the gear you have. If you need extra equipment, sometimes it makes more sense to rent vs buy. Start with what you can handle and upgrade as you grow.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing my ideas turn into reality. The feeling I get when I complete a project and go “wow, I made that”. You literally create something from nothing and that is something to be proud of. I also love getting feedback from clients who are really grateful for my work. People hire me to document very special moments in their lives and that is always incredibly rewarding.
