We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zina Yono. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zina below.
Zina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Originating from a Catholic Middle Eastern background, I initially witnessed the male as the sole source of income within households. I hail from a family of entrepreneurs, with nearly every male member pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors. My most significant risk to date was leaving my corporate job to embark on my own entrepreneurial journey. As the sole woman in my family and extended family, along with my mother, who also left her chemical engineering job to pursue her passion for floral design, I left the comfort of job security to pursue a dream in the floral industry, fully aware that I would be working independently. With unwavering encouragement from my husband, father-in-law, and uncle, they instilled the confidence necessary for me to make the leap.

Zina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My mother possessed an innate talent and a unique touch for any floral arrangements she touched. From a young age, she would collect flowers from the garden and transform them into beautiful designs. Throughout my childhood, I observed my mother’s creative process and subconsciously absorbed her knowledge. As I matured, I became more attentive to her work and began offering her suggestions. Eventually, we collaborated on various projects, and this partnership became a defining aspect of my career. This path is not solely driven by financial gain; it represents my personal triumph. It is a testament to my ability to be the only woman in my family, alongside my mother, to successfully establish and manage my own business. This endeavor is sustained by my own inspirations, dedication, and perseverance.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective method of expanding my client base is through word-of-mouth referrals. This success stems from two fundamental principles: trust and honesty. I firmly believe that building trust with clients requires unwavering honesty in all circumstances. I consistently maintain clarity and directness with clients to ensure that we are always aligned. My goal is for clients to leave satisfied and recommend my services to their friends and family, expressing their comfort and confidence in my ability to handle their events professionally. I also emphasize the importance of mutual honesty between clients and myself. Once we establish this foundation of trust, we can build a strong and successful professional relationship.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During my third year in the business, I was simultaneously working and pregnant. Unexpectedly, I experienced an early delivery at 28 weeks of gestation. I was fortunate to have a baby girl who weighed 2 pounds at birth. Unfortunately, she required hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for a period of time. The emotional stress of feeling responsible for abandoning each baby was immense, as this career represents my first child. My daughter is my first true baby. I placed my complete trust in my team, who assured me that they would manage all matters in my absence. The most challenging lesson in business is to delegate, but it is an essential skill that we must acquire. Without a competent team, we are merely a hobby rather than a successful business. I wholeheartedly trusted my team, and they reciprocated my trust. We are not merely a team; we are a family, and that is the environment we foster. I derive immense satisfaction from creating.
