Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leslie Black. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Leslie, thanks for joining us today. Do you have an agent or someone (or a team) that helps you secure opportunities and compensation for your creative work? How did you meet you, why did you decide to work with them, why do you think they decided to work with you?
Currently, I have three talent agents, one manager and a publicist. I’m grateful for each person on my team. They each play a vital role in my success. What I love about having three agents is that they are all in different markets. I have an agent in Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Having agents in different markets allows me to explore roles that film in different regions. My talent manager is also a big help with getting me seen. She sends me auditions in addition to managing my career as a whole. I think we chose each other to be completely honest. Everyone on my team and I all have a similar work ethic with one goal in mind.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an air force brat that was born in the Philippines. I’ve lived in various parts of the world prior to settling in the US. I began my career in acting while in college at South Carolina State University. I’m also a writer and producer who wears her heart on her sleeves. I’ve been blessed to play very captivating roles throughout my career. I’ve also written several projects and have begun producing. I recently launched a production company called Scene 29 Productions, llc with my partner and we have a slate of really good films on the horizon.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I have the desire to tell heartfelt stories that will pull at heartstrings. I have a desire to tell real stories and allow those who do not have a voice to be heard. I’m grateful that producing has allowed me to tell stories and I intend to do just that.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Sadly, this journey has its financial ups and downs. I’ve never had to pivot for a long period of time, but I’ve definitely had to balance and that in itself is harder than pivoting. I have a MBA in finance and I often work a 9-5 while pursuing my dreams. It can be a lot trying to balance both so I do what I can with the cards that I am dealt. I would advise anyone on the grind not to allow themselves to become a starving artist. If you have to pivot or balance, do what you need to do to sustain yourself financially while you are on the journey.
