We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chi Chi Okezie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chi Chi below.
Chi Chi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, let’s take a stroll on memory lane, back to when you were an apprentice or intern. What’s a memorable story from that time that you can share with us?
I did an internship at the French-American Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta shortly after my study abroad in Paris, France. It was such an impactful experience which prepared me for the business I currently own. I met my mentor who was also the director, at that time. I shadowed her at meetings, networking events and other business activities. I actually learned a lot about operating a business and supporting clients / partners. As well as, improving my French language skills and cultural competencies. In my current business, I use example of the French language, arts and entertainment to teach communication, diversity and networking.
Chi Chi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Chi Chi Okezie, owner / producer of SIMPLEnetworking, LLC. I launched this business 16 years ago in an attempt to change the way people think about networking. SN specializes in business networking, DEI and cultural awareness. Companies, institutions, federal agencies and associations engage in our seminars, online courses, consulting to solve common networking dilemmas. In our training, we include team building activities, discussions on case studies and cultural applications for development. SN also offers digital products, ebooks/books and licensing agreements. Our company was granted a Proclamation for Business Networking Day for November 13th. SN wants clients to make networking a lifestyle and tool for success.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I launched the company in my mid 20’s. Unfortunately, my biggest struggle was my age. Most of my counterparts were 20+ years older with corporate experience, higher degrees and bigger networks. In order to be competitive, I had to focus on non-traditional marketing efforts and branding. For example, instead of leading with the phrase: “I have over 20 years in Corporate America…”, I started my bio with: “Chi Chi has a thing or two to say about networking.” Lol instead of gaining access to key decision makers by introductions, I would visit their offices with a box of donuts. I started teaching evening classes at a university to build my credibility and company brand. I published 2 books / ebooks. I started speaking at associations to gain clients. Additionally, I registered my business with the federal government to gain teaming and subcontracting opportunities. All of these activities I mentioned were not age specific.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I do a little of both. I sell licensing agreements, consulting sessions and membership subscriptions on my business website. But, I link my ebooks and online courses from external sites. In regards to Ecommerce, my company goal is to make my products and services available through many avenues while driving traffic to my website. Case in point: MAC makeup. A makeup enthusiasts, likemyself, can purchase their products on the official MAC website. And, they can also buy the products on various retail sites including major departments stores and shops. The Pros are: automated and seamless purchasing, no inventory, well maintained platform for marketing and social shares. As well as, royalties and other perks /incentives.
The Cons: Taxes and associated fees.
