One of many heartwarming moments I will share with you. Two years ago, I had a client who was referred to me who was struggling with health issues. She had recently been diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis). Imaging confirmed she had 2 lesions on her brain and spine. Prognosis of living the rest of her life in a wheelchair was inevitable. Then, her search for all options of healing began. Read more>>

This was about 8-9 years ago, well before I launched Elevate Fitness. At the time, I was just doing personal training here and there… nothing official, just making some extra cash helping people when they asked. I get approached often by others in my day to day due to my physique and I would hope welcoming smile lol. Read more>>

It’s not necessarily from my career itself, but this story certainly helped to shape it. This December will be 26 years since I was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor and was given just months to live. After 5 neurosurgeries and 16 rounds of chemo, my family pivoted down every holistic rabbit hole you can name; and largely because of the power of prayer, my supportive community, and those holistic practitioners and modalities, I’m still here. I’m grateful for this question because, as I sit with it, I have so many meaningful moments to choose from. I started my career as a music therapist working in pediatric hospitals and, during my second year, I started seeing patients coming to the emergency department for stabilization (often meaning they needed placement at an inpatient psychiatric facility). These young people are what made me both fall in love with and be passionately set on fire for mental health. I began spending hours with teenagers following significant mental health crises, and the honest creativity that poured from them truly cannot be captured in words. Hence what I often say to clients, share it through music. Read more>>

One of the most unforgettable moments in my career came during a speaking engagement where I was invited to serve on a panel discussing mental health and the lack of resources in minority communities. I had the opportunity to provide psychoeducation on common diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. But more importantly, I was able to speak candidly about the deeply rooted stigma that exists in Black and Brown communities when it comes to mental health. Read more>>

A little over a year ago, I met a woman who had been suffering from hip pain and extreme tightness for many years. She had tried many treatments including chiropractic care, anti-inflammatories, and cortisone injections but found no relief. She scheduled an appointment with her doctor, but had to wait two months for the appointment, so she decided to come to me for a one-hour assisted stretch and release session to try and find some relief. As I was working on her hips, I felt impressed to tell her about how we carry trauma in our bodies, and I could tell that she was carrying it there. As soon as I said that, it was like a lightbulb went off for her and she began crying. She told me about a difficult time when she was working at a prison, and that now she lives alone without any family members nearby. Read more>>

There is something so magical about the relationship a long-term health care provider forms with their patients. For years, I’ve called “Bob” my favorite patient. Bob was in his 90s, a widower, and resisted going into doctors offices but somehow was motivated to come see me when he needed something. He’d fill me in on how he was doing at golf, billiard championships, and how his sons were treating him. I remember one day being so grateful of our relationship and telling him, a patient, that I loved him. I admitted this was the first time I’d said this to a patient but somehow felt comfortable doing so with him. Read more>>
