Today we’d like to introduce you to Maymunah Kelly.
Hi Maymunah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I actually started off my journey when I registered for a photography minor class my freshman year of college. I fortunately didn’t make it past ‘syllabus day’, as I couldn’t fathom going out and taking 90-100 photos at the time and submitting 9-10 of them for every class session. At the time it felt very robotic and counterintuitive to my goals. I wanted to learn from scratch and make my own path. Not a class or group to pave the path just me my camera, and occasionally YouTube/Google.
Which is interesting because I ended up coming back home a year later and pursuing film as a major.
While I did graduate, the notion I had my freshman year was the same as my senior year. Majority of what I learned about photography & filmmaking was through the lens of others. Peers and professionals, friends and colleagues. Classrooms were the for the aesthetic. Sets were for the grind. And I wouldn’t toss up any of the relationships and experiences I’ve had to this day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life’s not a smooth journey so neither is the path of the creative. Majority of my bumps are and have been learning curves. Making sure that I respect my work, respect my time, knowing my work and my worth. While also enforcing that within my contracts and agreements
My struggles and hiccups come from either misunderstandings or occasionally working with people that don’t respect the work that I do or the time that I have. Both are fast paced and relentless.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a filmmaker and photographer. I enjoy traveling, visual storytelling and reading.
My love of my work comes from the expression and the stories I can tell. Whether it be photo or film.
I’d like to think I’m known for bold colors and vivid imagery. But, I also think this is something normally you’d ask a friend or family member. They’ll see my work differently than I do. Fresher eyes.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Constantly striving to achieve the impossible.
