We recently connected with David Sein and have shared our conversation below.

David, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I was very lucky to have an extraordinary teacher, Mr Terry Nicholson, who gave me the opportunity to learn about and experience theatre directing, and the intricacies of mounting a stage production. Directing is a very demanding job and starts way before actual casting and rehearsals take place. For a director, understanding the script and bringing it and its characters to life is a challenge which must be met to satisfy oneself, the actors and the audience at large.

David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After an early business retirement, I wondered what I was going to do with the rest of my life. As a child I dreamt of either becoming an archeologist, a commercial pilot or a TV cameraman. Well, I was too old for piloting and archeology, so I enrolled in TV production school.

My dream, I thought was fulfilled, as on the second day in school, I was assigned to stand and operate a huge studio camera and shot a school event. It was great fun until my back started aching and I realized I may be too old to do this on an ongoing basis.

Looking around the studio, I noticed, behind a glass wall, a guy sitting in a comfortable chair, with his feet upon the desk, pointing at several monitors and looking very happy. I asked the operator of the camera near me, what the guy sitting in the cushy chair was doing. He replied, “he’s the director”. “Oh,” I said, and realized I didn’t want to be a cameraman anymore, I wanted to be a director!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a director, the most rewarding thing is to present, a story that is moving, and believable to the audience. This, hopefully, is done by assisting the actors in understanding and developing their characters in a way that makes them seem real, alive and meaningful to the play.
