We caught up with the brilliant and insightful 00Renity a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
00Renity, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve been singing for fun since I was a child, but I never really participated in any contest for it and frankly up until a few years ago I didn’t think I was any good. Singing is a talent that comes naturally to some people but at the end of the day, it’s still a skill you have to work on and I’ve improved this skill by practicing every day, singing whenever I have time and also doing vocal exercises. The thing is even the best singers in the world take time to nurture their skill and get better at it so I don’t think there’s anything you can really do to speed up the process other than being naturally talented but unless you are tone deaf, singing is something that just takes practice and time. Singing takes some skill. But It really takes patience and understanding of music theory and also passion. I don’t want to listen to a song that an artist doesn’t sound passionate singing. Singing is something that requires no equipment. You can do it anywhere so I would say the obstacles that happen don’t really relate to singing, but rather the business side of things.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the music industry when I moved to LA and I was already doing digital art and graphic design so that just put me in rooms with people who made music and I just kind of gravitated to it. And then I met my manager, who gave me the resources to become a serious artist and that’s when I really started running. The services I provide would be singing and songwriting. I typically write my own songs, but I’ve written songs for other people and I also feel like I have the skill to write a song in any genre. When I’m helping someone write a song, it’s typically when they’re suffering from writers block, which does not happen to me very often so I step into assist and help them take the song in a direction they wouldn’t have before. I have a very large vocabulary so I think sometimes the lyrics I write are very deep and complex. I’m definitely most proud of the improvement in my vocals over the last year and also refining my songwriting skills. I’ve always been a creative person and I’m glad that I have several creative outlets to showcase my passion and understanding of the arts.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A misconception I had going into this career was that it was all about the music and you just had to be talented to be noticed. Unfortunately, I had to learn that in today’s day and age in the music industry music is really only 10% of it. The rest is networking, making content, building your audiences on social media and learning the business. There’s a quote I really like I don’t know who said it, but the quote is “born to make art forced to make content.” One of the first things you’re told when you’re starting out your music career is that you have to get on all social media platforms and you have to start posting every day or at least a couple times a week or nobody’s gonna pay attention to you. This is something I had to accept over time and just realized that I’m not gonna get to where I want to be without creating content to grab peoples attention.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part about being a creative is I get to experience things that most people don’t. Don’t get me wrong. This career is not always easy. There’s a lot of trials and tribulation you have to go through to become a superstar. But I’ve gone to attend some of the most lavish parties. I’ve gotten to meet some very famous people. I’ve also gotten a lot of free things along the way. You also get to be in rooms with other creative people who normally wouldn’t interact with you, but they do because they recognize that you share the same passion as them. I’ve also gotten to travel a lot more and experience new places. As hard as this career path is, there are so many rewards and I might not be famous yet, but the journey is so much fun.
