Hi Vanessa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In early 2023, a turning point hit: I was let go from a job I held for years. This made me reconsider my long-term goals and what truly mattered to me. The idea of pursuing another traditional full-time job didn’t sit right anymore. I wanted the freedom to be independent, manage my time better, and harmonize work with my personal life. So, I took some time to reflect on my skills and passions and what would genuinely bring me fulfillment and happiness. This reflection led me to a new path that I’m excited to share with you.
I’ve always been passionate about Human Resources and People Operations. The joy of connecting with individuals and helping them thrive is a feeling like no other. I see firsthand how this helps organizations achieve their goals and bring their missions into reality. After spending over 15 years in this field, it hit me that I could make a difference for a wider audience, especially non-profits. That sparked the idea of starting my own HR consulting firm.
So, I took the leap and embarked on my new journey. The autonomy of being my own boss was incredibly fulfilling, despite the inevitable challenges and setbacks. The sense of accomplishment from overcoming these obstacles and witnessing the positive outcomes made the journey absolutely worthwhile.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting my own HR consulting business has been rewarding but has its fair share of challenges. Initially, building a solid client base took a lot of work. I had to network tirelessly, market my services effectively, and work hard to stand out. Managing cash flow also proved tricky since I was starting, and income was unpredictable and dependent on fluctuating project timelines. As my business grew, I had to maintain high-quality service.
HR consulting involves handling sensitive information. Building trust with clients takes time and effort, requiring consistent results and reliability. Moreover, staying updated with the latest HR practices and technologies is not just a necessity, but a strategic advantage in remaining competitive.
Balancing the hours spent building my business with my personal life has been a significant challenge. I’ve had to find ways to emphasize the importance of a sustainable approach to work-life balance, recognizing that it’s not just a goal but a necessity for long-term success. One way I maintain this balance is by never forgetting to spend time on my other passion—ballroom dancing. Dancing is not just an escape; it’s a reminder to stay connected with the things that bring me joy and keep me grounded. It’s a vital part of who I am, and it helps me recharge, keeping my mind and spirit fresh for the challenges ahead.
These challenges have pushed my resolve, but they’ve also made me more resilient and adaptable. Overcoming them has been a significant accomplishment and a reminder that I’m capable of tackling whatever comes my way.

Success is about embracing challenges, learning, adapting, and pushing myself to grow.
I also believe that success is about building strong personal and professional relationships. These connections are more than just support and collaboration; they’re proof of the trust and respect I’ve earned. Success means staying true to my values, aligning my actions with my principles, and moving forward with integrity.
