Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Hensley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jason, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
I’ve held various jobs over the years. I grew up in the commercial fishing industry. I have worked in telecommunications. I served in the US Army and fought in combat. I’ve worked in real estate, law enforcement, and a number of other things. While I’ve had many bosses, great and bad leaders alike. I found nothing is as good as boss as your bottom line when you have no other choice, but to make it work. Being self-employed and having a family, forces individual to just figure it out. There are no excuses there are no I cannot get this job done when your kids dinner is on the line. In my experience there’s nothing more motivating then wanting to see your kids eat and being self-employed.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We found an Exodus Jiu Jitsu a few years back because it gives us an opportunity to serve the community, by not only providing a high level of Jiu-Jitsu instruction and self-defense but also an opportunity to gather as a group of like-minded friends, sharing in the beautiful joy that is this martial art. We seek to develop long-term relationships which leave a positive impact not only on individual lives but on the community as a whole.
Jiu-Jitsu has served as a constant in the my families lives. It has helped them stay fit, as well as learn the power of perseverance, and find a community like no other. After watching countless adults, children and families experience the same things as they begin their own journeys, we decided it was time to share the gift of Jiu-Jitsu through teaching. From this love for the art and the life-changing effects seen in others, the dream of Exodus Jiu-Jitsu was born. We see Jiu-Jitsu as a good gift of creation and a tool that helps to develop self-discipline, self-esteem, self-sacrifice, and selfless service.
People come to Exodus for various reasons whether they’re looking to get into shape whether they looking for self-defense or to learn the art and become champions. But they stay for the community that is developed. A community of like-minded friends willing to suffer alongside of you, willing to celebrate with you, willing to just enjoy this good gift that is friendships and Jiu-Jitsu.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I think every industry and business are different when it comes to keeping morale. One of the blessings about being in the Jiu-Jitsu business is I get to deal with people when they’re at their happy place every time people come to train. It’s what they choose to do, it’s the place they go to for fun. I hear people all the time tell me, “this is the happiest part of my day”. We’re very fortunate and blessed to have a facility in which people consider it to be their happy place so morale for us is not a huge issue. People come there for that very reason. I can say that for me it’s easy to keep a high morale for myself and the staff. There’s a classic saying that that goes: find a job that you love and you will never work a day in your life. I might work this business, but it’s not a job!

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I haven’t read a ton of books on entrepreneurship I’ve been involved in various businesses and self-employed for the majority of my adult life. But I believe all knowledge is useful and benefit. I highly recommend taking time to read on the subject of economics and philosophy, but most importantly you should study theology. You should come to know the biblical story the true story of the world for it is out of that that we run our business.
