We were lucky to catch up with Gabriel Abrams recently and have shared our conversation below.

Gabriel, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?

Working in the emergency room is not for everyone, but the lessons you learn there certainly can apply to everyone. It is a whole new perspective on life’s challenges. Every day, hundreds of people fly through the ER doors having “emergencies.” While many people are having true life or death emergencies, the vast majority of people are not. Everyone thinks they are having an emergency, and you cannot see everyone at once so what do you do? Part of your job is called “triage” where you assess the acuity of the patient, or how emergent this really is. Patients with the highest acuity are seen first and patients with the lowest acuity are seen last. In order for the ER to function, you have to prioritize care; otherwise, you will be rapidly overwhelmed. There are many lessons one can pull from the ER, but this is one of the greatest because of its important applications to life. The ability to know what a real emergency looks like and prioritize accordingly. Much like how patients fly through the doors of the ER 24 hours every single day, so will the “problems” in your life. The reality is, most of these “problems” are not problems, just situations. Not every situation that occurs in your life is an emergency. When you feel overwhelmed because everything in your life seems like an emergency, realize it is not. Take a deep breath, assess which situations are the most critical, and deal with those first. The rest can wait. Spend some time around people on the verge of life or death and you will quickly learn what real emergencies look like.

Before you even begin hiring, you need to identify what the perfect team member looks like. You only move forward with the candidates that meet or exceeds these standards. The right team members do not need to be tightly managed or motivated. They are often self motivated and function well independently and within the team environment. For us, we only work with highly qualified nurses with backgrounds such as the ER and ICU. Our team is incredibly motivated to serve their communities and help people feel better faster from home. This has been a key factor in our success.
