We recently connected with Alexis Peterson and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I think that I have always been a creative but it took me a while to find the right niche. I was a make up artist for many years and then a hair stylist; while I loved the creativity, that never felt right to me. I sometimes do find myself thinking about where my life would be now had I started pursuing photography earlier but I am right where I am meant to be. Everything that happened in my life led me to this point and had it happened earlier I would not have been able to capture what I am able to now.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well first and foremost I am a mother to three amazing little humans. They really were the catalyst to my photography journey and continue to be my muses. I always was the girl with the camera in my hand and after I had my kids, I naturally started photographing them and really tried to capture their essence. This led to friends asking me to photograph their families and special occasions. My family and friends really believed in me and gave me the confidence to go out and pursue this full time.
I really try to tell the story of my clients through the images. I think that I can really see a person, maybe in a way that they don’t even see themselves. Being able to see myself is something that I struggle with a lot and working with women, especially mothers has been so healing for me. Nature is also a big part of my work and I try in weave women back into nature as much as possible in my images.
I’m really proud of all of the work that I do, especially my work with women. I try and do a couple group sessions a year, where we all meet up somewhere in nature and just come together and co create some amazing images. I always leave those sessions feeling really good and can’t wait for the next one.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
How this work makes the client feel. I am always so honored that these people trust me with their vulnerability and ask me to be a part of these special moments their lives. Getting your photo taken is not an easy for a lot of people and I love that they allow me to help them through it.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I definitely wish that I would have learned to use my camera properly when I got it. Even just running around following my kids as a new mom. I had a pretty good camera but just shot in automatic and learning to shoot in manual could have been a game changer.
