We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dewey Markie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dewey below.
Dewey , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was a child In elementary school, I was a part of an African drumming performance ensemble … and as a new member, due to my talents I was kind of fast tracked through the ensemble and eventually became a lead drummer and performer.
But seeing my peer’s reaction mixed with the teacher’s, I knew then, that I’d be pretty good at this..
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Marcus Platt, but my stage name is Dewey Markie.
I’m a local performer and recording artist out of the Highland Park/East liberty / Garfield area (we moved around a lot).
I’m primarily a hip hop and spoken word artist, but thanks to my involvement with ManMade Studios I have gained experience with Artist development, Consulting, photography assistance, and some event planning.
From this collaboration Brothamans, and I formed our own band/group called ‘Kinfolk’, which I am most proud of. Having released two projects as a group currently, our third installment ‘Kinfolk 3’ is set to release in the late spring.
I (Dewey) currently have 3 projects released on all major platforms and am currently working on releasing two more projects in the coming month, which include the Kinfolk 3 release and an upcoming solo project entitled ‘Yours Truly’.
My style is versatile, switching between melodies and raps, I think my true calling card as a hip hop artist is my ability to tell stories and my unique perspective. I also think that my willingness to share a positive message and explore vulnerable topics we deal with as people is a void I fill quite gracefully in relation to my peers.
If you want lyrics, positivity, a story with a message and execution… search for me.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Organic interaction. I am big on ‘take me as I am.’ I don’t like when people are bandwagon fans or the join the movement when it is trendy or popular.
Organic fanbases are built from the ground up and I prefer an organic relationship with my supporters.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To be an example for my daughter, and to inspire her to go after her dreams
