For me, the greatest innovation came when I took a course on Aquatic Bodywork. This is massage therapy done in a body of warm water where a person receiving is floating on the surface of the water and the practitioner does massage, stretch therapy, shiatsu, myofascial release, or any other massage style they specialize in. Most people will say that the most innovative thing I have accomplished in my career so far is my discoveries of bio-inspired, eco-friendly plastics made from natural products such as plants and their unique application in lowering the carbon footprint. However, I would say that my most significant innovation is the usage of these technologies to create opportunities for students and scientists of color at the legendary Tuskegee University – a Historically Black College/University – to receive mentorship and training in areas critical to their development in STEM.
