Have you ever had a friend look at a business and randomly throw out numbers that made it seem like that business owner must be making serious bank? We’ve experienced that many times, and know from conversations with operators and owners in those industries that their real profitability is often far, far less. The reason is often that there are unique challenges to profitability in almost every industry and so we wanted to create a space for entrepreneurs from across industries and markets to discuss the challenges to profitability in their industries.

I think biggest challenge for me was, and is getting my name out there. I’m not the most present person on social media, which I know is a great space to promote yourself, FOR FREE. However, I don’t utilize that tool as much as I could. But just like any business the start up is usually a big challenge and maintaining that same effort through the notnso good times. Seeing the failure when it comes but not letting it fold you. The biggest challenge to profitability first in foremost the cost that are being driven up for whatever reason, As soon as we adjust prices they increase again. Then while everything is going up around us we have employees that are experiencing there own financial challenges so then it places us in compromising positions, it is definitely a challenge when things are consistently getting worse for the small business owner. I feel that designers and photographers are undervalued and that the consumers just don’t understand the work that goes into designing and photography. I feel that this misconception is due to the lack of customers and business not seeing the work until it is finished and that they are unaware of the steps that we as artist need to take to complete their logo or website, nor do they know what we do as photographers to make sure their photos come out beautiful. Sometimes a book restoration job will come in that I know will produce excellent before and after photos for my portfolio, sometimes it will be a book that has the most heartwarming family story, and sometimes I’ll connect really well with the client, all of which tempts me to lower my prices to make sure the job gets approved.
