I have worked as a registered dietitian for 25 years. Having been trained in the traditional approach to nutrition therapy, I was programmed to take the lead in client sessions as the “expert.” As soon as I started in my first job, though, I realized this approach was never going to truly help my clients. Having clean, clear boundaries is almost as important in the one-on-one work that I do, as having a huge heart. I used to think that having these boundaries was not nice or was kind of uncaring. I was brought up to think that I needed to care more than anyone else about everybody’s everything—that I must always be available and responsive and give, literally, the shirt off my back if someone needed it. That the way to really care was to carry someone’s pain and difficulty as if it were my own. Read more>>

The best advice that I can give to anyone looking to make a big change nutritionally in their lifestyle is to make things as easy as possible for yourself! Often times this start with writing out what your week ahead looks like. When will you have time to cook? Do you have any long days that you know could get really difficult? Let’s plan ahead for things like that. This can mean different things for different people! Maybe you meal prep ahead of time. Read more>>

To be patient with yourself. In this day in age, our daily comings and goings are measured by numbers/ analytics. These numbers can be informative, but at the same time overwhelming. The Best advice I give to all my clients is to set an atmosphere that will help them be most successful. What I mean by that is we as humans know what our stressors are, just like we know what will calm us back down. Once you know the difference you make sure the elements that create stress won’t be present as much as possible. That piece of advice has proven to work like a charm time and time again. Read more>>

Most of the client recommendations I make are all very tangible, for example drink more water, add in electrolytes, hit a protein goal, take this supplement to aid with digestion, and so on. I love that part of my job but I think I love the mindset piece of it way more. Of course the things you do matter but the real work is in how you come to grips with the doing of those things. The best piece of advice, client learning, aha moment, whatever you want to call it, is about the realization that you don’t have to be perfect in order to see progress. Read more>>

First and foremost, it is ultimately important to put on our own oxygen masks first. If we are not taking care of ourselves, we cannot take care of others. Many moons ago when I was in college, I read Covey’s book on 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In one specific chapter, he described the importance of finding balance in for key areas of our lives; physical, well-being, emotional, well-being, social well-being, and spiritual well-being.
