Most people in this industry believe that at some point you have to minimize the clothing you wear to get further in your career and I don’t think this is true at all, many people are ready to take advantage of those who don’t know any better and I happend to be one of those people, unfortunately being exploited by others really scared me but it is also what drove me to become more independent in my career instead of spending time or money depending on other people to help me up the ladder, I had to learn the hard way that this industry can be dangerous if your not careful and sometimes it’s best to do things alone and make your own decisions on the kind of model or brand you want to create. I honestly think in my industry, there is a misconception that you need to talk about what any and everything that invoking sports in order to gain an audience. When podcasting, I think the number one thing you should do is talk about that YOU want to talk about. The worst thing that can happen is you make content that you don’t love yourself. Your content will suffer and most people understand and can see you’re not being authentic, and ultimately not follow you. Something a lot of people would disagree with me on is that you don’t have to do anything that you don’t want to do. In your career and in your personal life, you can make the decision to only take on projects, responsibilities, relationships, and obligations that help you grow and don’t weigh you down. I say this not to shame people for continuing going to jobs they hate or staying in relationships they’re unhappy in, but to empower them to take charge of their lives, realistically weigh the consequences of their choices, and start saying no to things that don’t serve them. However, I’m a staunch believer that if you’re equipped with the right skills, passion, and leadership, you should start by charging a fee. Most individuals capable of turning public speaking into a business have likely been doing it without a price tag for much of their lives.
