We asked some of the brightest and most thoughtful entrepreneurs, artists and creatives in the community to tell us about something they believe that most people in their space disagree with and we’ve shared highlights below.

People are still giving out advice on traditional social media and new media properties without understanding how those applications and networks have changed. There systems no longer work on engagement and no amount of posting images and text is going to get you the distribution you need to grow a business. Read more>>

Something that I’ve heard from multiple sources in business that I disagree with is that support from family and friends means they’ll be booking your services. I believe it is setting a business owner up for disappointment when the expectation is that family and friends should assist in funding your business. The business is ours; the mission is ours; the vision is ours; the product is ours, and it is our duty to find our clientele. Read more>>

I believe you don’t have to ‘sell’ someone something every time they come in. I welcome people into my shop like I would welcome them into my home—making the experience inspiring and enjoyable. That way they want to come again and again. Our shop is small and inventory is always changing and often one of a kind—having customers feel comfortable coming often is the key to our success. I believe there is no “one-size-fits-all” in fashion. People come in all shapes and sizes and that is both the challenge and the exciting part of designing and creating clothing. I think good fit extends beyond just how the garment fits the body and encompasses how the garment fits the lifestyle and values of the wearer. I don’t know about you, but I am constantly hearing messages about how I should be in nonstop pursuit of optimal productivity. It has been very challenging because I even had to decline participating on Project Runway because I was pregnant with my son. But I don’t regret it. He is the most precious person God gave me the privilege to have in my life. Read more>>

Our results, personally and professionally, are defined by one thing and one thing only. It’s not much money you have, who you know or having sheer determination and grit. The X factor that determines our results is: Discomfort. Results are limited by discomfort. Specifically, the discomfort you avoid, the discomfort you deny or the discomfort you simply survive (I call them the discomfort defaults). Read more>>

Homeownership isn’t for everyone. Every real estate agent and mortgage broker likes to say that everyone should aspire to homeownership, but there’s a lot of sacrifice that comes along with homeownership. Especially with today’s home prices it just isn’t feasible or worth it for everyone. I always say, “homeownership is the key to generational wealth.” Well, a lot of young people today are not having kids and not wanting kids. They would rather spend their money on traveling and experiencing life in a different way and that is perfectly acceptable. Read more>>

In the outdoor skills and survival training industry, there is a debate about the quality of “new” instructors who have entered the field, largely due to the popularity of survival-themed TV shows, YouTube, and other social media platforms. While some may question the value of online training, it can actually be exceptional and provide even more benefits than traditional in-person training. Read more>>
