Internships and apprenticeships, when done right, give interns and apprentices life long lessons. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, these opportunities aren’t accessible to many and so we wanted to invite folks who have had these experiences to share some of the lessons they’ve learned.

When I first started working in the professional photography industry it wasn’t in weddings, it was in outdoor adventure sports. I got an internship with a stand-up paddleboarding company called Badfish SUP out of Salida, CO. I served as an intern for over a year, however I have assisted many other engineers over the years as a means to cultivate knowledge. I think it is very important to learn under an experienced mentor in whichever field you choose to pursue. The best use of this time is to observe their techniques and efficient solutions to issues that may arise. The more people you learn under, the more styles you can observe/absorb. My internship was at the University of Minnesota Child Psychiatry Department. I was thrilled, but had no idea what I had gotten myself into. It was the most demanding, rigorous internship that I had heard of, at least compared to my cohort. We had many rotations, including child therapy, pediatric outpatient clinic, hospital rounds, neuropsychiatry assessment, etc. The one I remember most clearly is the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Clinic.
