A dad can’t find a bakery to make a birthday cake that can accommodate his daughter’s allergy-related needs. Two freelancers realize they need a way to organize all of their client contracts and can’t find software that adequately handles their use case. Necessity is often hailed as the mother of innovation – but not all ideas come from necessity. Unfortunately, in our experience, often media coverage of the ideas that powered amazing businesses and projects often stops at a very superficial level. The founders noticed a need and boom – idea. Often the ideation process has a much longer, more complex story and so we’ve asked some entrepreneurs and creatives we admire to go into detail about their ideation stories.

Since the beginning, I’ve always loved interior design and decorating; I grew up in a family with a very creative father who designed and built almost every home we lived in. We used to watch HDTV and dream of having our own flipping/renovating show. As a kid, I would spend all my allowance money on new decor items for my bedrooms and couldn’t wait to have my own home to decorate. Read more>>

My journey began with the birth of my first son. My son had a rough start and the Dr.s wanted to put him on so many medications which all had so many side effects. I knew there had to be a better way, a way to heal my son and help him, not just make him vegetative for a few hours. Read more>>

As a 15-year-old filmmaker, the opportunities to get involved in the film industry were few and far between. When I could finally create a script of my own, I could not find a single studio that could help me make it. This is when I had the idea of a student-run studio. This studio would be completely run by students, and help other students create their own films by providing organization, budgets, and distribution. Read more>>

The idea for my businesses started from a need to improve my health naturally. In 2005 I was diagnosed with a mixed form of Lupus. In 2011, not liking to take the cocktail of meds they gave me, I decided to take measures into my own hands, naturally. Read more>>

My organizational consulting company focuses on creating people-centered workplaces and “detoxing” toxic work environments. Honestly, the idea found me. When I first set out to decorate sugar cookies, I had no idea what it would turn into. I’ve always preferred baking over cooking so baking has always been a part of my life in one way or the other. I can remember in middle school a friend and I would make brownies and talk about having a brownie shop in the future. Baking Christmas cookies was always an anticipated event when I was a child as well as when I had children. Read more>>

15 years ago, I was working a corporate 9-5 job, and my mother became terminally ill. It’s a sad story – but I like to think that she had a pretty integral part in creating a career for me that would lead to so much more creativity, freedom, and confidence. I probably wouldn’t have had the guts to leave that corporate job for any other reason than to be by her side, but it was the perfect escape plan. Read more>>

Sparked by a conversation between some of Wilmington’s Top Black Planners, What would it look like to be in a place that showcased our talents? We discussed the idea of creating a space for us and by us and I picked up the charge, planned, curated, and executed the vision. Anxious and nervous would be some emotions that were felt as there are many moving pieces in executing an event of this caliber. Read more>>

Intentional Minds was born from the idea that all people, including kids, need yoga. When most people think of yoga, they think of asana, the poses. Yoga is much more than that. Yoga means to yoke, or unite. It’s the union of your mind, body, and spirit. Yoga is not only a practice you do on a mat, it’s what you carry off the mat with you as well. It’s how you interact with others, it’s how you choose to deal with your frustration, it’s how you react to challenges. In a way, yoga is life’s balancing act. Read more>>

Everything I make stemmed from a place of need I noticed within my own home. When my youngest was about 2 years old, she really struggled to open the snack containers that have snap lids or a lid that twists on and off. But she’s second born – so she’s fiercely independent and would watch her big sister open her own snacks, so she would refuse to accept help and would just be hungry. And I think we can all agree a hangry toddler isn’t great for anyone. Read more>>
