Working on something meaningful is a common desire – but how? We started asking folks to share the story of how they ended up working on a project they felt was meaningful because we wanted inspiration but also because we wondered if hearing from people from across a range of industries would help us identify patterns making it more likely for anyone to be able to find and work on projects that they would find meaningful.’

The most meaningful project I have worked on would be my most recent poetry collection, Not Your Average Fairytale. The book chronicles 11 years, from ages 14-25. It guides readers through a coming-of-age journey and what it was like growing up, the discomfort and unhappiness that accompanies conforming to other’s expectations rather than prioritizing myself and my needs, and coming to terms with my true identity. As an artist I’ve mostly strayed away from creating functional ware. I can appreciate the beauty in high quality, handmade functional ware but my creative joy comes from creating art that can’t be perfectly replicated. That’s not to say that I’ve never made functional ware. As a young artist in the 80’s, while I was working in art studios, I would practice my fundamentals by throwing small mugs and plates in my free time. Read more>>

This spring I finished work on “Polycosmos”- a short comic project about my experience in coming to realize I was transgender, as a part of my senior thesis at PNCA. Prior to actually starting the work properly, I had to do a lot of introspection over what I actually wanted the culmination of all my studies to be, how I wanted to represent these four years of my life. I just ran a successful Kickstarter project in November 2023 – the Hippocampus Alphabet Book. The project didn’t start out as a children’s book – it started as a way to bond with my daughter while she was learning her letters. Then, when we finished the alphabet together, I realized it would not take much to turn these drawings I did for her into a book to share with others. Read more>>

I finished my studies in 1999. I was 26 years old at the time. I didn’t have any projects in the true sense of the word until then. I’d been playing tennis for 12 years without any specific plans. I earned money as a DJ during my studies, more by chance than by design. Read more>>

A meaningful project I have worked on over the past several years is the body of work I call Reconfiguration, where the body parts of women appear trapped within the confines of each composition. I started making paintings for this series while working as an artist in residence at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation, later moving back to Syracuse, NY to work with the Everson Museum of Art to develop an exhibition based around the ideas in Reconfiguration. From the start of your journey in visual arts, there are often times two different paths to take: “Working” in the industry, which I had done for a few years in the Assistant Director’s Department, or “Creatively Developing” which is much more of a daunting task for most to accomplish in my opinion. Two projects come to mind. After Hurricane Maria, I flew to Puerto Rico to help restore a church. We rebuilt the whole place from scratch, including the altar. The materials that I use in my artwork is almost entirely discarded materials that I collect, clean and transform. For the last few years I have created work using almost entirely beach debris that washes ashore. I call this series of work “Along the Wrack-line”.
