Every once in a while we have the good fortune of working on a project that we feel truly matters, a project that we’ll still be thinking about years from now. Maybe even something we can imagine telling our grandkids about – surely you’ve had moments like that where something you did in your professional life really mattered?

One of my favorite meaningful projects has been something called “Dancing for Good”. This is a blend of my MYSFIT dance fitness classes + donating to local charities. Each time we do a “dancing for good” month, we choose a new charity and then host multiple classes where those who attend can choose to participate and get entered into a drawing to receive free MYSFIT classes/swag in return. And It’s also a play off my name ‘La Head’. Read more>>

I’m currently working on a new knitwear collection for So Squish called Teenagehood. It’s been one of the biggest collections I’ve made so far and a huge undertaking. Every time I visit home, to rural Pennsylvania, I come back with inspiration, usually taken from colors, shapes and textures I see in nature. After my visit home this summer, I left with a different feeling this time. Read more>>

When I was 18, I went on my first international trip as an American-born with my family to Vietnam. My mom hadn’t been back in her home country in about 20 years. We both learned a lot about how we want to live our life going forward through this trip. I recorded the whole trip and I never did anything with the footage until 2022, when I created “Tóc Nửa Nâu Nửa Bạc (Half Brown Half White Hair)” For me, this project is meaningful in a multitude of ways. I have always created bodies of work that involved women and the sea and often they became semi-autobiographical. When I was pregnant with my son Frankie, I took time away from my process and spent time researching. I spent 9 months diving deep into stories about women during the early 1900’s who challenged men to swim across the Hudson River, this was a time when women weren’t allowed to wear swimsuits nor swim in public. Since publishing my first two books, Ghosts Are Just Strangers Who Know How to Knock and Aura, I have learned a lot about being an independent press author and what goes into this, including self-promotion and marketing. I sometimes wonder whether there’s something wrong with me. Throughout my professional career as a musician I’ve played second fiddle to someone else in the group. “wildfire” is my most recent single, and it is truly the most in-depth I’ve ever worked on a song. A few years ago, I had a dream of a little girl sitting by the door of a cabin. A wildfire blazed outside as she looked out and sang the line, “I am broken down without you.” I imagined that she was waiting for her mother to rescue her, and that the two would spend their days searching tirelessly for one another. I wrote this story to honor the girl I saw. Read more>>

This is a tough question, but a great one. There have been many projects I’ve felt very strongly about, so it’s hard to assign a hierarchy. I feel my most recent project, however, is among the most meaningful because it’s happening in real-time. I think that all artists have to deal with condescending remarks from careerists who only view success in business terms, but without passion or meaning then I fear music would become just another number crunch to me.
