Every once in a while we have the good fortune of working on a project that we feel truly matters, a project that we’ll still be thinking about years from now. Maybe even something we can imagine telling our grandkids about – surely you’ve had moments like that where something you did in your professional life really mattered?

I feel that Portrait photography has become my way of combating media representations that desensitize our view of violence against Black individuals. I’m interested in capturing and depicting the resilience of Black people and the beauty that grows as a result. Inspired by the Delacroix painting “Liberty Leading the People” Read more>>

To this date the most meaningful project to me is my first written and published book ‘The Grand Scheme of Life’ (A Bammas Journey). When I said I was going to write a book I was laughed at… this book was not only to silence the crowd but to show that I actually have talent. This book has been highly regarded and is currently rated a 4.8 on Amazon, 5.0 on Barnes and Nobles and has a script being prepared for a movie. Read more>>

My work tends to be very autobiographical, I like to make work that finds unique ways to retell stories of my own personal and familial experiences. At first, being this vulnerable and public with my work was intimidating, but hearing the responses I’ve had from others with similar stories that have never seen it represented in a gallery setting, it gave me the confidence I needed to continue making my work and I knew it was important for it to be seen. I have been involved in so many deeply meaningful projects over the years here in Minneapolis. It’s hard for me to pick just one as the most meaningful, but one that stands out in my mind right now is Bone Mother, a theater / aerial silk dance production following the Russian folktale of Baba Yaga. Tacoma Washington City Arts Council sponsored an event named METAL-URGE several years ago. I had works of art in five galleries at one time as a participant. That and an ongoing display at The Proctor Art Gallery was what really got me noticed. I was getting repeat sales to people that liked what I was creating. I started making more. They were characters constructed from found items, garage sales, thrift stores and a supply of things I had collected. Read more>>

By far the most meaningful project I’ve worked on was creating the central image for the Breast Cancer Research Stamp. It was the first semi-postal stamp in the US. It costs more than a normal first class stamp to raise money for breast cancer research and has raised $95.8 million that goes directly to research. Each stamp that is issued by the US Postal Service has a first day of issue. Read more>>

It’s guaranteed to set me apart from the pack. Read more>>

The biggest artistic challenge I ever faced up to now has been the empty and neglected Dolphinarium in Tel Aviv-Yaffo. The project required enormous research and work to plan the timing, methods and logistics. A whole year passed between the time I first imagined what was going to be painted there and the final execution. The place is at the heart of a seemingly eternal conflict between city residents, the city, and the legal owner who purchased it. Each party has different interest regarding the complex. Read more>>

I would have to say my most meaningful project to date was when I created a series of abstracted plant paintings during the pandemic. During that period I was working as a social worker in a dialysis clinic and lost my mother at the very start of it. I was dealing with a lot of grief and loss, as were many people at that time. The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my flash posters for my first design class final. It was the biggest project I did while I was in school. The final piece consisted of three 14”x 17” posters that were a mixed of hand drawn designs and hand printed linoleum cuts. Each poster centered around a specific theme, and were inspired by the style of Sailor Jerry hand painted tattoo flash sheets. These themes were nostalgia, love, and body positivity. Read more>>

Déja Grüv Band was selected to represent the United States at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. It was a truly monumental opportunity for our band. One thing that I’ve learned as a creative is how important it is to do meaningful projects. We often spend a lot of time helping other people’s visions come to life, but it’s always good to pause and listen to what kind of work you feel yourself being called to do. I learned this lesson for myself when I embraced a passion project that changed everything for me. Read more>>

I think one of my favorite projects was after I released my first single. I got hit up by an artist from France named Mav’. He had heard my song and asked me to feature on the album he was working on. We talked and he showed me the beat or a demo and I told him I would do it. I was flattered and grateful he wanted me on the track. It’s a song about how he felt and cared about someone in a relationship that was there for him. After hearing the final I recorded my part in Orlando, FL. Read more>>
